BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

Has anyone ever installed / tried to install Ilium floorboards on an "R" I e-mailed them sometime back, and they said they did not make a set for it...but I wonder if another model might be the same & or fit ? RT for example.

I have tried just about every other foot-peg up / down /forward / back combo there is...+ raising / lowering the seat, bar backs,etc...just looking for comfort.

Only BMW I've ever seen with foot/floor boards was the R1200CL. You might look into those.

I will...but Ilium does list a set for the "RT"...I just thought those might be a closer fit, mounting, angle and all ?

The BMW R bikes are set up European riding style, with your feet under your ass.

Maybe you should change machines to a more cruiser type like HD or a CL model BMW so you feet are more forward. Floor boards are not going to be any lower than pegs and moving them forward would pretty much destroy the cornering lean angle available with the stock set up.

No thanks on the switch , and they can be lower, using lowering links...and be just a 1/2 inch forward. I doubt that will ruin the bike.

In all the time I have been riding BMWs' I have never seen one with Floorboards,(oil head or airhead not even a CL).

Seems completely out of character with the design theme of the machine. Its a quick nimble curve cutter as well as a great mile eater.
I have a 35" inseam but I am in good shape and have been doing this sort of riding for many years. To me it would be like putting ape hangers on it.

But having said that it should be unique and maybe that is what your after.

Well....I have a 32" inseam, arthritis, and have been "doing this" for 49 years...what I'm after is comfort. If I happen to upset the design theme of the machine ?...and my hip no longer hurts ?....I'm good with that.

And in all the time I have been riding BMW's I have seen a few with boards, ape-hangers, and even a chopper or two.....

49 years..Bravo..I have 50.

I was curious about the floor boards mounted on an R bike so was over to a friends house with a Guzzi that has them. Right off I could see that it will be a challenge to mount so the your ankle is not at an angle (toes up) that would be very uncomfortable for me at least. On the Guzzi they are several inches forward of where they would be on the R and tilted up a good bit. I don't think you could tilt them up very much on the R and tilting them down would not work because of ground clearance

With pegs you can tilt your foot to the normal angle that you would have while standing. (+you can move your toes/foot around the peg pivot easily) With the geometry of the R being what it is, it bears worth looking at carefully before going to the expense and effort.

Why do you think boards would be better for you than pegs?

Well, they do not mount the same on all motorcycles...If you look at the Ilium site you'll see that on the RT for example they mount in the original location, and in a more toe down position. If lowering links are added ?..then of course they are lower, and maybe ? a 1/4 inch more forward.

Don't know if they would be anymore comfortable ...but have tried several combos.lower, back, forward, Wunderlich pegs, GS pegs & mounts....just looking for the best possible. No way to know without trying.

They do provide more movement / position change while riding than pegs. My Vic has them, and I do like that aspect of them...just not "in-luv" with the motorcycle overall.

I hope you find the right configuration. It seems to me that the floorboard one is unique to a certain geometry. I have rented Hd's while traveling and the the modern Guzzi's that I have ridden with them were very comfortable but after a life time of ridding European style, feet forward is something I never have been particularly fond off.

I appreciate that. I'm not fond of it either, that is why I just want to try the boards...but in the peg location / in place [of] the pegs.

I'll be quite interested in how it turns out!
