So I pulled my clutch slave cylinder out and found gear oil. Can the seal on the input shaft be replaced from outside or does the transmission need to be opened up? Has anyone done or seen a write-up on this? I did a search but didn't find anything. Thanks in advance.

Nevermind. After some convoluted searching I found the info I needed. When I change the seal I will post if there are any tricks.

craigd, I don't know what source you'll use, but there are known precautions you must be aware of to prevent expensive damage when externally removing the shaft seal.

--When piercing the seal with a fat sheet metal screw, be careful to limit the depth of penetration and the use of excessive force so your screw "tool" does not distort the bearing's ball separator cage. It is quite ridgid, but if it gets bent there will be misalignment friction on a few (or many) of the balls -and- the bearing will have a very short service life after that.

--Be careful you do not scratch or gouge the tranny seal's Aluminum ID that mates with the seal OD surface.

--When tapping the new seal in, first coat the shaft surface and seal OD surface with a very thin film of grease to ease installation. Use a small hammer with many circumferential taps to slowly creep the seal into place while maintaining eyeball axiality. Omit each hammer tap location when the hammerhead contacts the tranny case . . . indicating it is flush with that surface.
