Can anyone tell me what kind of signal the in tank sending sensor makes? Is it an on/off or graduated signal?

As far as I know it's on/off. There is a float device that I think triggers a switch. Then a low fuel lamp is triggered. I've had mine out but it's been several years and I'm working from a poor memory. But just the fact that a low fuel lamp is either on or off tells me that's it's a simple on/off device.

My 02R has a float device in the tank with a glass reed switch that is triggered by a magnet float. On-off only.

Anyone know for sure on the '04 model on/off or graduated? I figured on/off for sure because of the light but thought maybe it's a graduated signal to the computer then an on/off to the light.

If it turns out that it's graduated then to the computer, I would intercept the signal before the computer and install something like this.

BTW - I found the range limit to an empty tank this weekend 187 miles, about 1000 yards short of the Shell gas station I exited for. Yes, it was up hill of my stop point.....

pretty sure thats on/off only.

and LOL, ive had nearly the same experience. highway is 200, city commuting is 180ish, 1150's are heavy. 1000 yds is alot. my "learning experience" was only about 100 yards.

Don't forget you've got a couple of litres in the left side of the tank.

If you're happy that you can pick up your own bike (you should be!), then all you need to do is lay it down gently on it's RHS cylinder head (put something on the floor if you don't want to scratch the head) then pull the bike over a bit further so that the wheels get above 'horizontal'. Then gently rotate the wheels back onto the ground and left the bike up again slowly. You've now got another mile or 3 of gas.

I'm glad someone has been paying attention!

Riceburner is right, sometimes you can access it by shaking/sloshing the bike side to side. That's an old trick.

And what computer? There is not a computer in there, just a on off float. nothing graduated about it. I think the only thing the float does is turn on the low fuel light.

It's a very simple design that works well in my expereince

Was in my fuel tank to do the filter, and found no float/lever fuel sensor. The bike is an '03. Was there an alternative to the float and lever?

My 02 does not have a lever. It has what looks like an old-fashioned film canister with a couple of wires connected to it. I don't know if the 03 used the same type of device. 0Maybe yours was pulled out somewhere along the way? Got pics of inside the tank? Are you going to externalizethe filter?

I have externalized the filter. I put it in the space in front of the battery. Haven't figured how to post pics here, didn't take any inside the tank. I don't think the fuel sensor was removed, the yellow light comes on at about 140 miles.

This is me holding the fuel sending unit. In the photo I have removed the cover exposing the internal float.

Sorry. I'm not too good at posting pics. The unit is a small plastic cylindrical canister about 2 inches long and 1 inch diameter. Has a cap that when removed reveals a circular float.

Thanks, that's probably what I have. Wonder why there's no mention of it in the manual.
