Greetings from Ireland.

Just picked up a 1996 R1100R this week, low mileage 27K (Km), in need of some TLC, scratched rocker covers, some corrosion, constantly on fuel light, possible ABS issue according to PO, though (touch wood) seems fine after 3 days of riding.
Rode a R1100RS for six years, 4 years ago, so somewhat familiar with the R259 bike, though that bike was practically new when I got it. The R already brings back fond memories of the RS (my main ride is currently a 2012 F650GS). I' hope to drop in from time to time to tap the collective wisdom.

That's a great looking Roadster RSMike! A fine specimen, for its age. :)

I traded "down" from an R1150R to a 2000 R1100RL (non-abs) a couple years back, and am appreciating this roadster more and more every day. Easier to work on, and much more comfy on all-day rides. I do miss the 6-speed transmission, though...

Looks great Mike, I've got the same year/model and I'm loving it more by the day. My first and only advice is for you to replace all the break lines with braided stainless, at this age the rubber in the lines are either already breaking down or will in the very near future…this is a pure safety issue. I went with HEL over Spieglers.

Thanks All. Eli, I'll add the brake lines to the list!, all the fuel lines are first, trouble is the weather has been so good since I picked her up last week its very difficult to consider taking her off the road to do work, though with our climate that will likely change very soon. I love that red seat on your bike. Did you get it re-upholstered? The vinyl on mine seems to be gone quite hard and slippy, another item that I will eventually address!

PS: I have a bizarrely reversed fuel warning light ( stays on until I reach the low level, then goes out!), I posted on it over on the 1150 side as there was a thread going there on the fuel sender unit.

Hi Mike, my stock seat was all red but in bad shape when I got the bike. I found a company in Poland that was listing on ebay, they offered replacement upholstery made to specific bikes with a wide range of color choices and options. I got the dual seat covers for $69 but with shipping from Europe it came to about $100. Then I had a local auto upholstery place tear off the old and install the new for $40. All told for $140 I'm very pleased. As for fuel lines, I think HEL makes them as well. Another "safety" upgrade is to ditch the stock horn which sounds like a toy and install a Stebel Nautilus air horn…night and day as far as getting the attention of encroaching cars and trucks.

I wish I could help you with the fuel sender but I'm still learning the electronics of the bike.

In the next month or two I'm going to replace the exhaust system with a GPR Deeptone from Italy…$300 delivered and it will shed close to 30 lbs from the bike once done.

BTW: What problems have you been having with the ABS? Mine often alternate flash that ABS not working, usual fix is to turn bike off and on and usually clears up…something to do with electrical current I've read.

The ABS is a funny one. The PO was very honest with me and told me the ABS was faulty and sometimes failed to pass the start test, however been riding the bike almost every day for 10 days now and no ABS faults. I know I'm tempting fate now by saying that. PO brought the bike to main dealer to have ABS checked last Sep as it was faulting then. He has passed on the service invoice which says exactly this "Check ABS light on: Checked ABS system. Fault stored for ABS fault. Need to replace ABS unit to clear fault. This is not affecting standard brakes on the bike. Safe to ride but will not have ABS brakes."
PO seemed unconvinced about their analysis, he thought it might be down to the bike being used very little (he only put up about 1500 mils in last 2 years), and battery being low. He also commented the ABS seemed to fault more in damp weather ( which we'd get loads of here). It has been mostly dry since I got the bike.

I find it unbelievable that the dealer can just say replace the whole ABS unit (over €1k here) because they can't clear a fault and give no indication as to what the fault means.

Anyway the first thing is that the ABS is very sensitive to available voltage on starting, below a certain threshold around 12v and it will fault, as you indicated, running a short distance then stopping, switching off, restarting and riding off often clears this one, However afaik this type of fault causes both ABS lights to flash in unison, when they flash alternately it indicates a different fault. I don't know much more than that except there are feeler gauges in the bike's toolkit which I believe are for checking the gap between the ABS sensor and the ABS ring (the toothed ring is visible inside the front left side brake disk), so I assume there may be someway to reset that gap if it goes out of spec (I'll check the Haynes manual later about this).

I'm really interested in how you get on with the Deeptone exhaust, please post details when you fit it and pictures!

I think I saw those seat covers on ebay, added to my watch list along with many other things like shocks, exhausts, various other parts ...... horn now also added.......
