Hi guys... I'm riding a 98 R1100R with the newer circular speedo/tach meter. Toying with the idea of replacing with an aftermarket speedo and found this on ebay: http://pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?nav= ... 1020812842

Anyone knows if this is compatible?

Hi paikia.

I dunno if it is compatible, but I have to ask what you are wanting to achieve.

Is you current speedo broken or do you want a change or do you want a more accurate speedo?

Hi CrazyCam,

My stock is working fine... Just that I dislike its size and aiming for a sleeker look for my R11R, hence seeking a replacement speedo. I don't need a tacho (I really don't look at it and I seldom do high revs).

Read somewhere the drive ratio of the speedo is 1:2875 (whatever it means) on the R11R. Posted some queries to some of the eBay sellers but really they ain't the technical sort who knows.

Dunno if this is what you really want, but, if you want a minimalist look and take off the whole speedo/rev.counter, clock assembly, you can set up a trip computer for a push bike to give you a very accurate, digital speedometer, trip meter, etc.

I fitted one for a while on my R850R, purely to work out the speedo error.

These devices work with a small magnet fixed to the front wheel, mine was on one of the disk carriers, and a sensor that counts the front wheel revolutions and does all the calculations.

The ones I use on my bikes are SIGMA BC series, wired (not wireless) and they are pretty easy to fit and program for really accurate speed and distance, and also give you a clock, but use a very small space.

Yes.. I suppose you are right to say I am trying to achieve a minimalist look. I am also looking at getting a set of adapters to mount a tubular handlebar replacing the current 2 piece handlebars.

And I know I need some of the lights like the neutral gear indicator, low fuel, engine check at the minimum.

Reading the actual speed is important but aesthetics is the main thing in the grand plan.. hence a replacement aftermarket speedo instead to make the bike looks 'complete'.... hmmm sounds contradicting here. LOL

Just had another look at that speedo on e-bay.

You do know that your bike will go a good bit faster than that speedo will show?

Ya.... Read some users' comments and there are some concerns. But as long as the speed isn't outrageously 'out', I am good. I am located in the tiny island of Singapore and honestly there isn't exactly a need for a speedo since we can't go fast enough with the amount of traffic and when there isn't, you'll hit the next traffic junction by 5th gear.

And hopefully the warning indicators work as intended. Still considering though. Would definitely prefer a compatible mechanical speedo but can't seem to find any.

I understand you not being too worried about top speed in Singapore.

Although these are much more expensive, you might want to have a look at the Acewell products.

Skip the instrument, if you have an iPhone then download the new Yori Moto free app and you will have a GPS accurate speedo, GPS mapping, odometer, dual trip meters and a gas level indicator. You can fabricate a lamp bar that holds the neutral, turn signal, ABS, oil and temp lights from the original cluster. In the end, GPS speedo's are more accurate that the factory cable.

That was one of the plan... until the thought of data charges I'll incur esp when I switch telco when riding cross border. :-k

The app doesn't use streaming data to my knowledge, it only uses the gps signals to find its location much as your phone hunts for cell tower. Since it's free I think it's worth while to test out on your next cross border trip. Besides, I thought European countries had much more reasonable roaming rates than us.
