Is there any huge reason not to remove the butt ugly canister from my 1150R.......the European bikes do not have them, will I suffer any ill effects??

Personally I don't mind the cannister, the cat. converter, the muffler, or the smog devices on my car, etc.

This is a California thing intended to reduce/prevent evaporative emissions from the fuel in your tank. If you believe the California Air Resources Board, evaporative emissions from weed whackers, lawn mowers, motorcycles, etc. are a big threat to the well being of the residents in our fair state. Others think that this regulation is yet another attempt for CARB to justify its own continued existence now that heavy lifting in reducing air pollution has long since been accomplished. If these things appear on bikes sold outside of CA, it is probably because BMW does not want to bother producing 49 state models and CA models, and perhaps because BMW wants to be able to move bikes to different markets easily depending on demand.

In any case I don't quite understand the dislike people seem to have for the canister. Granted, it isn't pretty, but it is fairly unobtrusive and you certainly don't see it when you are riding. My bike is black, so perhaps the black cannister blends in with the rest of the bike in a way that it would not on a red or blue bike. In any case you could always just paste a few smiley face stickers on it...

I would hope for the sake of the environment people would consider leaving them on.

In Cali, they say that a parked 1996 car produces more emissions than a 2004 model on the freeway. The air coming out of the tail pipe of many new cars is cleaner than air going into the engine. The result of "bakeoff" emissions. New city of LA building requirements call for real shade trees in parking lots. All the little sources add up when there are millions of them.

Remove the canister, mow your lawn, and have a barbeque.

Why does it seem like your bike is covered in white powder?

Spray it so it look like a Nitro bottle and get some repect on the street. Then you can be green and keen.

I lived with this guy for a year (well, as a room mate only you understand!) and gained a whole new understanding of college "pro-athletes and athletics"!

BTW.....I understand that California is going to legislate flatulence next........their first pass :

Every California citicen, in the interest of preserving our good air, will be allowed the passage of four flatulence events per day, each citizen will define a 1 hour time span for three of the events, the fourth has no time constraints to accomodate unplanned circumstances.

Also each discharge should not last longer than 5 seconds, nor exceed a 70 db level. Each citizen will be required to file a weekly plan with the California Flatulence Control Board.
