Factory Touring Windshield on Facelift Roadsters

Anyone out there using the factory tall windshield on their 2011 or later R1200 R?

If so, your impressions would be greatly appreciated. BMW is showing it in their new catalog and it appears to be tilted back at a healthy angle - much better than I'm getting from my Cee Baily's on the same factory bracket.

Link to the photo you think looks like a healthy angle? I have one on my '11 and I don't think it has much of a tilt at all. Don't have an earlier bike handy to compare to, though.

I'll dig through my pics and see if I have one from the side that would show the angle pretty well.

I had it on my 2012 for a short while. I boxed it up and sent it back due to excess buffeting and noise. I have the Wunderlich Fairing and the protection is a bit less but the buffeting is non-existent when compared.

Same here, far too much buffeting and noise from the factory touring screen. I now have a Wunderlich trophy fairing and it is ideal for 5'9" height.

I have the touring screen, upgraded from the original sport screen. I know a lot of people here complain about it and get fancy after market screens but for me it works just fine. Takes the pressure off the chest and clean air to my Shoei gives me a nice ride. It is fairly upright, not tilted back very much, maybe the BMW team found the best angle for it because if tilted back the top edge would be lower and closer to he rider...creating turbulence that doesn't disapate before hitting you. Most of the air is displaced to the sides, not forced over the top.

Bruce, Here is a photo comparison of the OEM tall windshield on the stock bracket (top; from 2013 motorrad catalog) and (bottom) with the tilt described in the "Tilting Windsield on 2011 - R12R" post. Like others, I was ready to remove the windshield permanently because of the turbulence without the tilt.

I have the touring shield on my 2013. I think its great. But then I came from a 2005 HD 1200R without any windshield that I generally used for touring and longer rides.

Neuro,

Thanks for the additional information. I have been studying your earlier post about how you did the tilt. It is what the hot rod people used to call "very sanitary", and well documented.

Don E. also proposed a solution, but I found that it would require cutting the plastic cover over the wndshield (as did all my approaches). To me, the ultimate solution would not require cutting any of the BMW parts.

On my earlier Roadster, I studied this forum, manufactureres' web sites and other peoples roadsters for 7 months before I started making modifications. The research was well worth it. When my shield arrived from Cee Baily's in February, I opened the box and screwed it on and went for a test drive down my neighborhood highway. It worked perfect, right out of the box.

All I had to contend with were light contaminations from the instruments and headlight. All eventually handled.

After my 3 initial attempts with this bike, I decided to go back and start over with the whole research thing. Interestingly enough, there were a dozen or so different approaches on the '07 - '10 models. Yours is the only working one I have seen here.

For the meantime, I'm just going to ride the bike and enjoy it. (I think.) By the way, that's my new bike on the cover of the accesory catalog. How cool is that?

I am quite satisfied with the Wudo screen. You can vary the tilting as to your wishes: good protection, no buffeting and a little more noise.
