2005 R1150R has a rear tire 170/60 zr17 can i go to a 180/55 zr17

You can - at your own risk. 170 = 5.0" rim, 180 = 5.5" rim ... I wouldn't recommend mounting the 180 tire on the 5..0" rim as it is not specified for the same.
I believe the R1150 shares the same rear rim with the R1100S and that bike had a 5.5" rim as an option. Checkout on egay.

The 1100 uses a 5" rim also, correct? Can I go 170 on my 1100?

Which R1100 do you refer to? The R1100S was available with the 5" rim (170/60 x 17 tire) and with the 5.5" (180/55 x 17 tire) ... Hence with the appropriate rim you could mount the 170 or the 180 tire ... These rims can also be mounted on the R1150R.

Thanks for the input guys The only reason I consider going wider is for aesthetics , thought it might look a little nicer

Only issue I can see is the clearance between the tire and the swingarm. Feels like there's about a finger's depth there now with a stock 150.
Anyone made the swap on an 1100R? I know I could swap to a 5.5" rear wheel (eg: K1200RS) with no problem, but is the offset between the two wheels identical? If so, a 170 should be no problem on the stock 1100R 18" three-spoke. Dissenting views?

Have a 2002 R1150R and I installed 180 Metzler Z6 on it with no problem. However, the 170 will have a more nimble feel whereas the 180 feel is a little more sluggish. My main goal was aestetics and hopeful by being a bigger tire it would last longer. Results:Didn't last longer. Everything else was a push.

On my old R1100R I had done a wheel swap to the 5-spoke design (front = wheel of R1150R, rear wheel of the K1200RS aka flying brick). At first I took the 5" rear rim with 170 tire and later on used the 5.5" rim with the 180 tire. Tires used were Michelin Pilot Road I and later the II. No problem at all and enough space between tire and final drive. I had even removed the steering damper. Handling was always very good and the looks obviously improved
