Trading in my F800R for a R1200R Classic. What to expect?

Post by Bounty320i »

Hi guys,
I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this one if my dealer offers me a good trade in on my F800R. I love the looks and styling of the RR and since owning a 1998 1200c I've always had a soft spot for boxers. What, in your opinion, can I expect in terms of performance, handling and overall ownership experience?

Make this easy on yourself. Grab your checkbook and ride your F800 over to the dealer's for a test ride on the R1200 R. When you get back to the shop, take the offer and write a check. You will never regret it and you will like your R12 more and more the longer you have it.

Of course, you may have to dingle around with the windshield and possibly the seat. The sender strip for the fuel guage will die sometime. When that happened to me last year, BMW was out of replacement strips. By the time they were back in inventory, about 4,000 miles later, mine had resumed proper functioning.

You're going to love this bike.

I have a Classic. I ride all day on that seat with no issues. Have started to think I might need an actual windshield for high speed stuff. Or better earplugs.

Worse thing about the Classic is listening to all the "I can't believe they'd make it with tube rims! I'd never ride a bike with tubes!" [-X

Oh yeah, relative to the 1200C, expect real horsepower, near-infinitely better handling, and being able to look at it without puking. Sorry, those things were ugly.

Bruce, SF_Hooligan - much appreciated. At this stage, I think I am going to close the deal on the R1200R without a test drive. The more people I talk to the more I want this baby..!

Will probably get that small sport screen fitted for aesthetics more than anything else, and I am not too bothered about the tubed tires. What else? Can't wait. A few more details to iron out with the dealer before it's officially mine!

Oh, the C might be a bit quirky but I just love that bike (Trinity).. It's a 1998 model and still runs like the day it rolled out of the showroom.. :D :D

My wife is trading her F800ST for a R1200R Classic. She did not like the spokes or the tubes so my dealer is trading me the wheels off a standard R1200R. I am having them powder coated black. Adding the bags and a Ztecnic sport shield also. Wheels should be done next week. Hope so because now she is riding behind me and that means I have to act my age. I ride a K1300S and it is hard to be good.

A little late to be posting to this topic; but, today I rode an F800R loaner while my 2007 R1200R was in for service; so I rode them both today back to back.

I also own a 2012 800 ABS Triumph. This is the "road" version of the Triumph 800 XC. The F800R motor was nowhere near the motor of the Triumph. Both Triumphs have exactly the same 800 motor. The BMW had a lot of buzz; seemed harsh and way down on the seamless amazing torque and power of the Triumph; I did like the gear box.

Now the F800 vs the R1200R....not even close. I had the booster plug put on the R1200R today and it really smoothed things out; but even without the plug, the R1200R is just the superior bike in every way. F800 would be good for blasting around town and 100 mile or less trips to the twistys but otherwise...no thank you.

Hey, you know I suffer from MMPD .///Multiple motor cycle personality disorder. I also have a 2009 Ducati Monster 696 with shorter gearing and Terminoni exhausts and ECU mod; it's a lot closer in concept to the F800R and it simply kicks the F800's ass in terms of fun and purpose.

I loves my BMW, but for me, the classic Boxer....that's the iconic BMW. YMMV
