My local dealer quoted $1,579 for a four-year/$0 deductible extension to the factory 3/36 warranty with Zurich.

Contego Direct no longer accepts new clients. Based on past topics here, Contego deals went for $600-$1,000 for a three-year extended warranty. If not Contego, where did you get yours, and how much?

The dealer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana offer me an extended warranty for $1300.00. I don't know for how long ... maybe three years and I don't know who. Mazda offered me an extended warranty in 2003 for my car but had I bought it I would have not used it to date. And I think it was about eighteen hundred.

Put that money in the bank...Odds are you will not need it and you will have it three years later.

If the odds DID NOT favor you keeping some of that money......NO one would sell those darn things!

I was shopping for an extended warranty the last week of the wife's F650GS twin's factory warranty. Yeah, I felt I needed it, learned a lot about that bike in the last year.

I called around and ended up contacting Western Service Contracts since they are near home in Menlo Park, I think. I actually got a live person to talk to me which I guess is not the norm since they expect you to call a dealer and will not sell direct.

During our discussion about the 3 policies they offer he asked what type of bike, so I told him it was a BMW 650 twin. He said "oh, that's good, we have been paying out for a lot of final drive shafts lately". That was what he volunteered. Then I told him we have 2 BMWs and mine has the drive shaft and didn't say anything more about it. Yeah, I was waiting for the pitch.

This is the first time I purchased an extended warranty but one came with the bike I traded for back in '05. It was for 4 years and it may pay for itself but for the 3rd owner, not me. That bike spent a fair amount of time in the shop but I tended to get dealer backed help when I had it. I will say it helped sell the bike, mine had the warranty, the others didn't.

You really have to read and understand your contract. I keep reading this and that and so much of it comes down to having the right contract.

If anyone knows where to buy an extended warranty from other than a dealer please let me know.

RPM One offered an 84-month, unlimited mileage, zero deductible extended warranty for $800, a significant drop from what a local dealer quoted me.

It covers engine, transmission, primary drive, drive axle (final drive et al), suspension, steering, brakes, ABS, electrical, gauges, fuel system, luggage/hardware and seals and gaskets. In addition: rental reimbursement, travel expenses and roadside assistance. You have to follow scheduled maintenance and keep receipts.

Among exclusions: battery, tires, clutch plates or any failure occurring in Mexico.

The BBB reports two complaints against RPM One in the past three years.

That sounds like a pretty good deal, especially for you guys with higher miles. You can drop $800 bucks on these bikes real fast on just parts.

My only concern is that I do all the maintenance myself, since I trust myself more than others...and save a few bucks soing it. Would they allow me to do the scheduled maintenace myself if I keep the reciepts?

Yes. From the terms and conditions:

MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS: You must maintain Your Vehicle according to the manufacturer’s recommendations as outlined in the owner’s manual. Your owner’s manual has separate required maintenance schedules for “normal” and “more severe” operating conditions. You are required to follow the maintenance schedule that applies to Your Vehicle’s conditions. You must be sure only the proper grade of lubricants and coolants, as recommended by the manufacturer, is used in Your Vehicle. It is necessary for You to retain verifiable receipts for all parts and materials necessary to perform the required maintenance. If necessary, this documentation will be verified by the Administrator.

I've been communicating with Kelly Gilbert at Battley Cycles, which services the extended warranty on behalf of RPM One, in Gaithersburg, Md. (Seems like easy work for the dealers.) Note that the best prices are available only for "new" bikes -- those with not less than 30 days remaining on the factory warranty. My factory warranty expires March 28, so I'd need to purchase the extended warranty policy by Feb. 28.
