Windshield Removal Problem

I have a 2000 r1100r with the stock windshield. It's very noisy and I want to take it off.
The problem is I don't seem to be able to loosen the nuts under the handlebars that attach the bracket to the bike. I can turn the nuts but they don't come off. Do I need to somehow pop off the circular tabs on the top of the bars and get to a allan bolt or something?
Thanks.
Ray

The upper brackets should have a allen head bolt that threads into the handlebar on the underside just before the handle unit, and the lower bracket should be attached to the fillister head screws (elongated upper allen head bolts) on the goose neck (Where the handlebars attach). The upper brackets just needs to be unscrewed, the lower bracket will need to have an allen wrench used on the top and the socket underneath. Hope that helps.

Thanks. I think the issue is that what I am seeing on top of the bars is a cap on the allen heads. I tried to pry one of them off but it seems to be stuck. Anybody know how to pry the caps off? I just ended up scratching the chrome.

That black cap is probably the cover for the bolts that hold on the mirrors. You "should" be able to pry them off carefully with a very thin screwdriver, utility blade, etc. if you need to. However, the windshield should only be connected by the bolts on the underside of the bars that you'e already found.

Exactly, the BMW windshield mount brackets don't attach to the mirrors. The handle bars have a threaded hole on the underside that do not go through.
