BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

I'm considering a 2009 R1200R. It has the Moto Techniques barbacks on it and it's not back nearly enough for me. However, I think at least the front brake cable is at about its maximum as it is, so don't think it could go any further. I'm not sure about the other cables.

Has anyone replaced their brake (and other) cables and have a rough idea of the cost of that modification? I wouldn't do this myself, but would have the BMW dealer do it.

Front brake "cable"...is that not a hydraulic line?

Touratech sells a 3cm longer line for 60 euros, but I'm not sure 3cm is quite enough.

The dealer didn't seem to know if any other cables would work with the R1200R. I've read about people using the GSA cables, and mentioned that. But he didn't think they would work. He did suggest Spiegler, and I've contacted them asking if any of their kits would give me the 2-3" that I think I need.

Im going to say it. Don't buy the bike. If you put your bars any higher/further back, your going to start complaining about helmet buffeting. Then your going to go out and buy some huge windscreen that ruins the clean lines of the naked bike. Then your going to start bitching about the seat and footpegs. etc etc etc....

Save yourself the headaches and just buy the RT. Same bike, better wind protection and ergos.

The ergos of the RT are only slightly better for me. I'd still need risers on it. And the pegs aren't in any better location. But, yes, it does have better wind protection. That said, I live in Texas, and better wind protection just means riding hotter most of the year.

The R1200R is a much more flexible bike. I don't mind a few modifications if it'll get me where I need to be. It's all about compromises, and I think at this point, the R1200R is the best compromise for me.

(The bike that really fit me was the Multistrada 1200. But I'm quite ready to trust the Ducati reliability just yet. Maybe in a couple of years. )

I love my '11 1200R, but I don't believe I have ever seen a one size fits all bike. Everyone is different. If your bike fits you well then you are lucky. I am only 5'7" tall so a few modifications are needed for my bike to fit me comfortably.

I like the bars, but they are too far forward and too low for long rides for me. This position KILLS my back. I did install a set bar back/risers. This suits me much better. I did need to install a longer front hydraulic brake line. The cost was $89.99 for the 2.5" longer line and $85.00 for the dealer to install it. I had it installed while they did the 600 mile service. $175.00 well spent.

Now the fit is fine for me. I don't feel anymore wind than I did before the mod. The brake line was the only thing that needed changing. As I continue to ride I may need to make a few more mods. Or maybe not. After all, I'M the one who rides it and I will make the changes as needed. I have already installed a J and M sound system. Very cool indeed.

When I get done my bike may be unrideable to some, but it will be perfect for me. After all, isn't this why they make these accessories?

I had my dealer order a Spiegler custom line for my bike, 3" longer than stock. Only $60. I hope that will be easily long enough to do whatever I end up doing. I also need to have the bike serviced and one or two other items installed.

But I agree: everyone's different. There aren't many bikes out there that fit me stock. The MTS 1200 was pretty darn close. If the reliability of that bike is shown to be solid over time, I may have to go that way eventually. I really liked that bike.

Anyway, I love so much about the R1200R so far. But it needs to fit me, not the other way around.
