Looking to buy an 2004 R1150R with 40K miles? The bike seems to have been well maintained.... but, should the mileage concern me? Its a "Dark Ferro", so my selection pool may be limited.

What thinkest thou?

New guy here.... no thoughts from you veteran BMW oilhead owners?

shouldn't be an issue at all as long as it's in good nick and has been looked after. My '04 Rockster is on 84K+ and is going strong. :)

I'd say a bike that's got very low miles (eg less than 1000 miles per year) would be more of a risk (seals may have dried, rust in the engine etc).

I'd ask about the 36,000 mile maintenance. 40,000 miles for one of these is just broken in, but it needs regular maintenance. Cycle Specialties is a good place to get an honest opinion about your prospective purchase.

I would ask who did the maintenance also.
If it was a dealer, then all the service records are on their computer, and you can take the VIN number there and find out.

If it was the owner, most DIY service guys have all their records (it's a unique trait BMW DIY guys have, not only do they do it, they document a lot, like parts receipts, etc.)

The BMW mottorad community is a small one, and the history of a bike is easily discovered.

After 8 years and 33k, I am not concerend about hitting 40k. I hope to hit 100k.

"just broken in" I support that statement 100 percent. =D>
From my experience with two R1150's and from the words of LA motorcycle cop (who broke in 3 of those) [-(
I would have very little concern about 40k. 2004 with 10k? I would think about it.
Personally, I have a few receipts from Chicago BMW, SW tires and tons of Amsoil purchases.
If some day I will decide to sell one of my bikes, how will it effect the sale for the bike?
Bike runs well, no smoke from the tail pipe, title is good? Go for it and have fun.
Good Luck.
