hi everyone
very shortly i shall be looking for a set of winter tyres.
i would like to use a set of sport touring tyres .
please what have you all used on this model bike

how long did they last

here are my shortlist , thinks so far .
1. continental road attack , used before on a aprilia tuono. lasted well.5000 mile
2. michelin pilot roads , on bike already. good so far 7800 miles ,i have only 300+ miles.
3. pirelli scorpion . had them on a buell , good and lasted 5000 miles.
4. michelin power 2ct ,hard centre soft edges , last up to 4000+miles.

open to any suggestions ,don;t want anything to sporty ,just good wet grip and mileage .

I had the Pilot Roads on my bike when I got it. Just replaced them this spring with the Pilot Road 2...I got 20,000 km on my original tires and hey could have gone a bit longer.

I think the Conti Road Attacks that came on my bike are the best tires I've ever ridden. Great performance in all conditions and they wear better than average.

After 1000 miles I find the Michelin Pilot Road III's are by far the best on our bikes. I've done 80MPH for 4+ hours in 95F heat, a few miles on wet pavement, and even a some on gravel roads where they are surprisingly effective. All around they can't be beat. Much better on all surfaces than the Conti's that came on the bike or the Dunlops I replaced after 7000 miles. No word yet on mileage for the MPR3's, but as long as its reasonable I feel performance is much more important than longevity.

Pirelli Scorpion Syncs get my vote, especially when you're talking wet weather performance. I've forgotten how many sets of Syncs I've mounted on my 12R, love this tire.

Replace Syncs for PR3's to see if they would be a bit better all around tire. Loved the Syncs and am loving the PR3s so far.

I'm also running Michelin PR3s and so far like then, the tire thread is a little more aggressive than the PR2s but they still come up short on dirt and gravel back roads. The R1200R (IMHO) is a great dirt road bike and when properly equipped will go where 95% of the GS bikes have been. I've given a lot of thought to the Pirelli Scorpion Syncs but have concerns about mileage and high speed handling, I can squeeze 10K miles out of a set of Michelins and feel secure at whatever speed the machine can do.

Had my roadster off-road the other day and the PR3s held up pretty well ... however, was expecting a punctured tire at some point which never came. Knock on wood. They are very stable at 80+mph.

I've gotten a few thousand km's on my PR3's and am very pleased so far. Ive done gravel, rain and high speed corners on warm sticky tarmac with them and they have so far performed flawlessly. Had Metzeler Z6 Interacts on previously and the PR3's are a big improvement over those and also very similar in feel to the PR2's. Very confidence inspiring and well balanced.

I used several sets of Pirelli Scorp Synch and I agree with Chitown that they are very confident inspiring tires but at max 4,000 miles they are worn (REAR) out. Have used now a set of Dunlop Roadsmart and they seem to wear better (replaced the rear at slightly over 5,000 miles. In both cases the front start to cap at about 4,000 miles. Anyway both tires seem to be well suited on a R1200R.

P.s. in Texas, especially in the western part, the surfaces are very grainy which does not help the wear of tires add to this the heat and at max 5,000 miles a tire is done.

I've just put Road attack 2's on mine and they are brilliant but I have only got about 7000km out of the rear at the best of times.

Road Attack or Road Attack 2?

I have the most experience with Metzeler Z6 on this machine. I wore out two sets. They last about 11k miles but tend to wear scalloped and get noisy as a result. I still have a Z6 on the front.

I have a Conti Road Attack 2 on the rear. It has 5k miles and looks like it should hold for 9k-10k all in all. It rides and wears smoother than a Z6, I don't hear any noise from it, but it has a visibly flat area in the center by now. I don't feel the latter when riding.

I'm on my second set of Road Attacks. I just wish I could get a few more miles out of them. My buddy has BT-023's on hit RT and love them. Might try them next, Bridgestones that is...

I got 8,000 miles out of the original equipment Continental Road Attack tires. Nothing against them, but the front started cupping badly at around 7,000 miles. I replaced both Continental tires with Metzeler Z6 Interacts because that is what my dealer stocks and they are what I fitted my previous bike with (R1200RT). I am satisfied with the Metzelers for both dry and wet handling. I have about 3,000 miles on them and they look like they will go at least 3,000 more miles.

looks like michelin has all the votes so far. i did read a write up late last night about the michelin pilot road 3 , uks bike mag april 2011 ,about using this tyre in the wet with their knee down , the picture shows this ,however he could not hang off any more to the side without having a longer arms . take some bottle to do this , i have down this on a supermoto with cut rain slicks ,wet track and with dire results , wrist fracture .. a lot differant ball game to road tyres and heavy bikes + plus greasy rubbish uk roads .
also favoured is the conti road attacks , i did mentioned i used these ,but not where , i tried these out in 06 on a tuono factory in the french alps , dry and wet days ,i was worried that they might let go on that bike , i was wrong . the poor bike got serious grief and 3000 miles in that week they performed better than i thought ,still plenty of tread for a few more thousand miles .they went from temps of 22c bottom of mountain ,then to 2c at the top ,then to dry and wet within 40 mins of each other , so overall great tyre.i did not see the end of the tyres life because i sold the bike for a ktm 950 supermoto , that had pirelli scorpions on , 3000 miles the rear lasted.

few owners of the r1200 r use the trail type tyres , any difference to the handling at speed ? 70 +?.

My 2011 came with Bridgestone Battlax BT021 tires, I have no complaints with them so far. I have notice that they are great on Portsmouth's (NH) metal deck bridges. Most motorcycle tires are rather twitchy on grooved highways and metal bridges, but these are very stable.
