BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

I came off a wonderful 02', RT, to join you all with the "less is more" riders choice. A Roadster! I knew I was giving up wind protection, creature comforts, and had all BMW luggage (with deep sidecase lids). My wife enjoyed her and felt secure on her (always good!).



My "plan" was hatched 4 years ago. The RT was honed. K&N in the airbox, Z-Technik exhaust and windshield, Ohliins shocks, Comfort seat, Wunderlich tankbag, canceling signals, etc. She ran great but was only going to "get along" better by losing weight and gaining power. She was honed but was getting up in mileage, 70K, and the Ohliins were needing to be rebuilt. The power brakes were awesome but I learned that they would cost me a fortune if much went wrong with them.

The "then new" R1200RT gaind 15HP and lost 50lbs. Good, but, I'd like to do better. R1200R. Gain 15HP and lose 140lbs. Much better!! I'm approaching 400K and wind protection makes it possible to feel a bit better at the end of the day(s).



Clear shields don't work for me. They are likened to putting a milk crate on a bike to me (no offense intended). Clear shields cost a BUNCH less than the Hannigan Fairing I chose for my wind protection, but, I do enjoy walking up to it and admiring the integration that has been worked out by Jerry Heil. Handle-bar types don't quite give enough protection (from past experience). Seeing as how BMW won't build me the Sport-Tourer I crave, I am left to do it myself. I will come in under the cost of an 09, RT, by a couple K. I will have a bike that has few others that will resemble it.



Jerry claims a 15lb. weight penalty and I have no reason to dispute that number. I have felt that Roadster would benefit with some additional front weight bias. It does help keep the front end from pushing. I now can carry both of our rain gear, a CyclePump, a plug kit w/tools, my wet and cold weather gloves and my wifes cold weather gloves, and a light-weight bike cover (when we are traveling) with room yet in the fairing. This gives me more room in my tankbag and other luggage. I'll welcome your inputs. Marc

Excellent outcome! I, too, thought the RT was just too much. The R provides a platform to make it our own. Naked, windscreen, fairing, .... to each his own and it's all good.

Well done.

I avoid editing posts, but that fairing needs to be seen twice. What a cool look.

No offense inted by me either, it's not my vision of this bike. However, it's pretty good looking and if it suits you that's the only thing that matters.

yeah I know what you mean I have a hannigan on my R also love the thing, some don't like the look's but who care's, It's nice and quite and stay dry in the rain, I can say they build a stout fairing I was hit by a deer last fall and only broke a turn len's and crack'ed w/s I cut the shield down 1" and It's still nice behind it, I read so many post's about w/s if some would only try the hannigan they would really be suprise'd, and how easy it is to install, and remove

I like the bags on the R, where do they come from
