Removing front fender ... ack!

Want to put a Pyramid Fenda Extenda on the front fender, eliminating the road debris on sundry front end bits.

Simple enough, no? Several OEM part sites appear to indicate that the fender is attached via a pair of bolts on each flank, through the wind deflectors. I remove them.

Nada! Sucker refuses to budge. Must be that big bolt b/w the forks attaching the brake-line banjo, no? Removing it, I still get the same resistance trying to remove the fender, plus brake fluid is now dripping down to one of the calipers.

Banjo bolt is now back in place, but WTF am I overlooking??? (Aside from now having to refill the brake master cylinder.)

I don't know exactly how, but I do remember removing the fender without opening the brake lines. I *think* both pieces came off at one time, but I don't remember that detail.

If I were in your situation, I'd remove the front wheel, for clearance and visibility, then take out the bolts that connect the front fender to the wind deflectors on the forks. Just remove all of it. Maybe the two fender sections come off as a unit; with them on the bench, it ought to be clear how to separate them.

According to my Haynes manual the front tire needs to be removed to get the front fender off. Thr fender is bolted from the bottom up to the fork bridge. Removing the front tire is the only way to get at the bolts. Hope that this helps.

I took a closer look at the fender, and now see that its fastened to the bottom of the bridge that connects the forks to the A-arm.

Yep, I had to go through this drill recently to replace my fender. There are 6 Torx bolts that need to be removed: 2x under the bridge, 2x on the left air deflector, and 2x on the right deflector.

I couldn't get adequate clearance to get a ratchet with a Torx bit for the under-bridge bolts, so I removed the front wheel. Having done so, the rest of the job was a piece of cake.

Edit: Make that 4 bolts to be removed. Upon further reflection (and a confirming jaunt to the garage), I see that two of the bolts are just used to attach the air deflectors).

John - Why are you taking the fender off to put on the fenda extender?. I don't remember any great drama when I put mine on.

Here's a pic of DonE's Fenda Extenda, which I took tonight w/ my Droid after our Club meeting.

Part of the Extenda (hidden) attaches to the underside of the OEM fender w/ double-sided sticky tape. The screws further secure the fender to the Extenda.
