On Jaurary 29, at the end of a long day on a familiar route with lots of sweepies and twisties, I suffer a brain phart then ask myself “what the hell am I doing on the outside of this left handed sweeper?” Then, oops, I’m sliding across SR76 on my SW Motech crash bars. The bike gets repairable cosmetic damage. The body – maybe Medicare pays by the rib so the hospital exaggerates, but it still hurts. My gear sacrifices itself to save my skin and head. Ride safely my friends.

The ribs are great fun. Don't even try the bed - learn to sleep in a reclining chair for a few weeks.
Good news is you might feel OK when the real nice weather gets here.

You never know how often you sneeze until you crack a rib or two..

Glad to hear you are (relatively) OK and that the protective gear did it's job. So was it a low-side slide? Did the MoTech work as well as you would have hoped? Im curious about specific damage to the bike since it seems to me that a low-side is the only type of crash with a reasonable chance of a bike not being totaled. I often wondered about the benefit of a MoTech bar set with various sliders on the R12R. Any info you feel like sharing is appreciated (lessons learned and all that). I hope you heal quickly.

Having totaled my R12R and broken a rib, I can highly recommend an abdominal binder. I found a black one at Walgreens for about $30. After stretching around the rib cage, the velcro fastens the binder initially; then a second, stretchy piece fastens from the other direction to give a lot of support to the ribs. Very effective. Rum works too.

Finally. A distressed jacket that got that way the hard way! You can get big bucks for a jacket like that on Advrider. All the NY City guys want one like that.

I can attest to the fact that it is very helpful to lean hard against a wall and give yourself a nice tight hug before a sneeze or cough. And look straight up to open the airway to let it out without a lot of restriction.

You've heard of delayed apex? This was a too late apex. Once the crash bars hit the pavement it was a sled ride across the highway. It was a ride too, my gloves and boots are 100% intact. I didn't get off until I hit a berm or something on the other side of the road. I can't help but wonder what happens without the crash bars. There was some discussion of this elsewhere on this forum. Maybe without the bars the wheels don't get levered off the ground and I dig myself out of the turn somehow.

There is that downside to crash bars - they generally DO reduce the cornering clearance (they have to in order to perform their function,) and unlike the feelers on your footpegs - they don't have any "give" to them.

Don't you think that putting the crash bars on restrict ground clearance?
That may have been the cause of this guys accident.
I know if I had them on they would be touching down and probally bringing me off!
Why not try the cylinder head gaurds instead!

Sorry to read about your crash. It sucks, and I am glad to read your post---you are still here. THAT is all that matters! Sometimes s@$t happens. I too was once in the wrong place, wrong time. Hence a 2 & 1/2 year later wrist surgery to fix the injury (health insurance in the USA SUCKS!!!!!). Just count your blessings, learn from it, and move on. I am sincerely glad to read you are still around to post on this forum!

Get well soon! I am with Kieran though---just get cylinder guards. The rest is all just left up to chance.

I added a couple of photos of the bike to the album, located here http://tinyurl.com/4me5zd8. Clearly, the crash bars did their job. I probably could have ridden home -- if could have ridden. That said, I'm persuaded that the bars levered the wheels off the ground and facilitated my slide across the highway. I'll opt not to replace them.

My bike already has the BMW nylon guards on it. I was thinking about adding the SW Motech guards for more protection. If the SW Motech guards limit the ground clearance I think that I will stay with what I have.
