Scott, did the BMW flaks at the show tell you this? I'm not so sure.
If you look at the photos of the 2011, there are two types of seats — the most noticeable difference being a grab band on the pillion. Furthermore, in the BMW press release, under optional accessories, there is this:
Ergonomics and comfort
• Seat, extra low (height 760 mm).
• Seat, low (height 770 mm).**
• Sport seat (height 800 mm).**
• Seat, high (height 830 mm).
• Comfort seat, high (height 830 mm).**
** Also available as optional factory-fitted equipment.
Maybe the release is wrong, or I'm reading it wrong, but I reckon the comfort seat will be an additional cost on the 2011.
[edit] More about the seat from the press release. Clear as mud:
"… Greater comfort, in particular for the pillion too, is provided for by the new comfortable seat. As part of its optional equipment and optional accessories BMW Motorrad offers seats with a more sporty design and other heights …
Seat height (without rider) in millimeters
800 (standard)
800 (OE, OA, sport seat)
830 (OE, OA, comfort seat, high)
830 (OA, seat, high)
760 (OE, OA, seat, low)
750 (OE, low slung)
OE — Optional extra: The motorcycles are assembled complete with all the BMW optional extras originally ordered.
OA — Optional accessory: You can obtain optional accessories through your authorised BMW Motorrad dealer; optional accessories have to be retrofitted to the motorcycle."
