Found the PIAA installation photos in abundance on the R/R page, but wanting to know if anybody has put additional lights on their Rock?

I love the "Walmart fix:" buying $15 driving lights in the auto dept of Walmart and creating brackets from available metal bits to install them.

My dh is an electrical whiz so the wiring isn't really an issue. I'm looking for mount ideas, etc.

For front drive lights, I have the Motolights mounted to the brake calipers. For rear drive/brake light, I installed the BMW accessory LED light.

Yeah, I'm trying to avoid Motolights. $200+ is ridiculous when I can get PIAA's or Hella LIGHTS at the auto parts stores for 1/4 that. I'm looking for someone who's gone the 'do it yourself' route. Mostly interested in the 'alternative' installation options.

Already got Hyperlites on the rear.

Looks like I'm gonna fall back on my techies at the BMWBMW club site.

I have PIAA1100Xs on my Rockster : pic :



They're mounted onto my custom headlight panels/brackets - but I'm thinking about moving them down onto the headlight supports as long as they'll clear the oil-cooler-covers ok.

I've used the PIAA relay kit to wire the lights into the MAIN-beam circuit ONLY. I don't approve of extra lights for any other use. (Glare from over-bright dip beams is one of the things that really pisses me off on the road, and I won't do the same thing to other people if I can avoid it.).

They work very well at filling in the gaps that the very focused main beam leaves empty - the upper halves either side - if you go into a corner in the dark on main-beam without them you're suddenly blind.

I converted my Rockster to HID (xenon).
Much more visibility at night and nobody misses me during daytime

Riceburner: Unfortunately, you've got your lights mounted about where my windscreen is. That won't work for me.

Thinking I want to use the screws that are UNDER the headlight set.

I'm considering moving them down so that they're (more or less) on the same horizontal line with the other lights - and fixed to the same headlight mounting bracket - they only need one hole each so it shouldn't be too hard, I just need to see if they will fit.

PIAA 001's!!

I wanted greater visibility AND better 'seeing' at night - especially since I live in suburban MD where the deer are EVERYWHERE, having been displaced by all the houses being built.

Just took a 10 minute test spin on a dark and tree lined two lane road with my newly installed PIAAs. Added the Autoswitch (uses the turn signal cancel button to activate the lights).

Nice wide band of illumination (well onto both shoulders of the road) without being so bright that oncoming cars react by hi-beaming me. I'd guess about equal to my regular low beam in power.

The yellowish light makes my bike easy to see.



I think I did well. I got the lights for $40 on ebay and the autoswitch was $27 from CycleGadgets. I may still upgrade my lowbeam bulb to a halogen.

CH Racing: The Xenon lights look great! did you replace the entire light or just the bulb? What did you install? I'd like to go the same route.

Genuine xenon does not work without a ballast and an ignitor. Hence these items have to be installed as well. In my case, I used a combined ballast/ignitor which can be place in between the instrument cluster and the headlamp unit. Only minor mods have to be made to the headlampunit. Takes about 2 hours to install. I have used an 8300K xenon bulb for the really blue light.
