R1150RT Left Case used in a R1150R without the OEM exhaust?

I just took out the OEM exhaust on my R1150R and replaced it with a shorty than leaves a lot of space available for considering a bigger left case, like the one in the RT.

These two cases rest on three supports.
I believe the two at the top are compatible/identical,
my question is about the one at the bottom,
I believe it is not located in the same position,
being the one in the RT closer to the rear tire than the that of the RR.

If they are not identical, has anybody been able to adapt the bottom support so as to use an RT left case on a R1150R?

Thanks :D

Eduardo.

Eduardo,

Search the message board for "full size left case"... you will find lots of info about options for that 3rd mounting point.

Eduardo,

Yes an RT case will work fine. I made a lower bracket out of aluminum plate. Just used a vise and hand tools (jig saw, grinder, etc) I'll take a picture and post it tonight. It's been installed and in use for about 6 years.

You could also just mount some U channel on the case to line up with the stock bracket, but I'm not sure how that would hold up long term. I'm thinking the case might crack in that area - even if it was reinforced with a backing plate.

Thanks you two for the advice.
I also think cracks may develop in the bag the way Jon indicates.
I think though that if a backing plate is placed outside of the bag then cracks could be avoided,
the condition would be that the plate should be thick and that it can be made to match the surface of the bag...? I don't know if there is space available for that thickness, nor I know if the the bag's surface is flat in that area, if it is not then matching the form of the plate to it could be quite complicated....???

Well, with these comments..., :-k the best way could be the the option of fabricating a lower bracket (as Jon indicates).
Is welding needed for it Jon?
I wait for your posting of the pictures.

Thanks a lot :)
Eduardo.

For reference, here's the installation of BMW Authority muffler relocation / full size bag bracket:

We put full size left system case (from R1150RT) on Mrs. Sweatmark's Roadster for a season.

Once upon a time, there was an aftermarket relocation bracket from European parts mfr., plus another made by one of our board members IIRC.

DJ the Aussie created a full size case bracket using a 2nd pillion footpeg mount piece, attached as mirror image to position the case tab inwards to suit the RT case.

Sorry for the delay Eduardo. Here are a few pictures of the bracket I made.

No welding required - just plate aluminum cut with a jigsaw, drilled with a hand drill, bent with a vise and hammer.

Compared to the work of others on this forum, the quality of my workmanship really sucks.

Take a look at the threads below. Both very nicely done.

Hi member 230
Regarding "BMW Authority muffler relocation / full size bag bracket"
do you happen to have the Part numbers required, eventually the price/s too? :-k
Thanks a lot :)

Hi Sweatmark,

What happens with the pillion's foot rest when using the BMW lowering kit?
You lose it? Or can still remain in place? :-k
Thanks a lot :)
Eduardo.

The left side pillion footpeg components are reinstalled outside the BMW Authority bracket. Lower section of the bracket assembly is thin gauge steel (approx. 2 mm), so the footpeg is not displaced much from original position. Note that the upper/inside section is thicker for bracket rigidity.

Hey brownj, your bracket looks pretty good!

And internally it looks like this.
The plates are connecting opposite U clamps.
One of the plates has some other thiner piece below it in order to make for the different
angle the case offers to each arm of the U clamp.
The clamps are stainless stell, bought at Home Depot, something like 3$ each.

Externally the case looks like this.

Ditto that! Good to see you back here DJ.

Remind me - did you fabricate that mount bracket or retrofit an original equipment part?

Hi guys.. Happy New Year..

Yeah still paddling and surfing everyday and not as much time to ride like I did.. but I did get out on my bike today.

The bike's still going great and people still think my beautiful black R1150R is brand new.. even though it's almost 10yrs old now.. :D

I'm lucky the bad floods are not near me but how crazy has the weather been lately.. :-k .. I made my bracket out of a bar of aluminum.

Hi DJ - Good to hear you still have (and riding) your immaculate looking R1150R.

I still have mine - within a whisker of 100,000 Km now. Bought it new 6 years (and 3 months) ago. Just great motorcycles for touring.
