I just got plain lucky. Picked up this '04 R1150R with 4K miles (yes, 4K!). Incredibly clean -- it will probably never be this clean again, because I ride practically every day. That's one of the nice things about living in South Texas. I will not disclose the selling price except to say it was "well bought".



I do ALL my own maintenance, so thank goodness it ain't an ABS bike...

You're going to have a blast.

Do the Texas constabulary get wound up about rural WFO?

and you got the high seat, which makes all the difference if you're >6'...(but if you're not, happy to trade you a standard height seat...!)

Wow! What a looker! I love the graphics, wish my Piedmont Red red that that! Speaking of the high seat, I'm 5-9 and I switched from the low seat to the high seat, and I still with I had an inch or two more to stretch my ankles out when they are on the pegs.

Studies have definitively shown that yellow is in fact slightly faster.

Yes, the Dark Ferro paint scheme had black valve covers as OE. I also put black spark plug covers on mine, the silver didn't do it for me (to be truthful, that happened only after my first drop of the bike... and black was what they had in stock at the dealer). I definitely like black spark plug covers better... less flashy... more industrial looking.

Lovely bike... now, I remember how I got suckered into this BMW thing (not that I am unhappy about it).... Looks like mine did when it was very new. The best detail about that paint scheme is the red spring on the rear shock. Some people like the graphic decals, I did not. They just were not "me", especially the "r1150R" ones on the side panels. They were just too "over the top", to my bland taste. I thought the stripes on the tank were OK. But, I took them all off anyway. The only one that I left is the little one on top of the tank by the fuel hole. I liked that one. When people see it, they are like, "what is that supposed to mean?" But, it's invisible under my tank bag most of time.

Nice Motorcycle. I have this exact machine. I am new too. I have had her for one month. I have the GS hand guards that came with her and the BMW clear windscreen. Maintain her and she will be yours for a lifetime.

Have you changed the fuel line connectors yet?
Those lovely black engine cases are going to look awful if you don't.
And cut the cable/zip ties of the wiring loom underneath the headstock.
And buy yourself a spare clutch spline and final drive assembly soon as well. You're going to need them eventually.

The advice on the zip ties and fuel connectors is definitely good, however!

I have to admit, this statement freaked me out a bit as well. I have 51K Miles on my 2002, and have had no such problems. I'm not sure when they have historically hit for some people, but so far so good!

Mine has 48k miles.
No problem yet.

Have read though that something like 10% of these bikes do have this "final drive problem".
But the mileage when it happens is 80k miles plus.
Do any of you guys know anything related to this statement?

Now..., is this final drive "Cardan" problem typical to bike of other brands too?
I'd like to hear that normally the Cardan outlasts the life cycle of our bikes..., could this be true?

I have the exact same bike, same color, bought with 1,900 miles in March 2009 and now have about 10,000 miles. I added a Rick Meyer seat, risers and an Aeroflow touring windscreen and tank wings, which I love.

That thing is fabulous! I'm at once happy for you for finding one with such low mileage, and horrified that it's only been ridden 4000 miles since 2004. HOW could the previous owner resist its allure?!

I just purchased a R1150R 20004 and I need a warranty vehicle inquire from BMW to see a history of all recalls on this motorcycle. Do you have one and if so could I have a copy of it.

Thanks for the heads up on various things. I'm not going to panic about the clutch splines...at least not yet. That's just one of those things where you have to roll the dice and let fate decide.

At least one of the fuel line connectors was replaced under warranty in 2007 (I have the receipt). Very nice of the previous owner to take care of that for me...

People always ask me if the "R1150R" lettering came like that from the factory. Even I wondered about it when I first saw the bike online. Very unusual for BMW, to be sure.

The only thing the bike really needs are fresh tires. Although the ones on there are original and only have 4K miles, the front is cupped and the rear is flat-spotted since the PO preferred to go fast in a straight line and apparently didn't lean much into curves. The Shinko Raven 009 is a good tire at a great price; I'm also considering the Michelin Pilot Road 2.

I'm glad I got the tall seat, since I'm 6'2". I didn't even know such a thing existed!
