How does the lap counter know the distance that would indicate a "lap" has been completed? Do you have to set the scale somehow for the size of the track you are racing on? For example, if you were on a 1/2 mile oval track, the completion of that distance around the oval would be one lap. If you raced on another track that was 3/4 mile oval, you would need to set the lap counter to adjust to that new distance, would you not?
Just an aside, but this brought to mind my old running track days from high school. Our school's track was 1/4 mile (440 yards), so if you raced a mile, you had to complete four laps of the track to run a mile. However, other schools in the area had tracks that they built to accomodate their space for their football fields and had varying distances for one lap. Some were 400 yards. Some were 385 yards. It made for disorientation in starting/finishing spots and confusion in your pace because of these deviations from the standard 1/4 mile, 440 yard track. Of course, now everything in track and field is metric, so you need a 400 meter track as a standard. I never could understand why they had a 1,500 meter run, if the other races were 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters. Shouldn't these guys have to run 1,600 meters, to be consistent with the other races?

The top one primarily controls the clock. The bottom one primarily operates the tripmeters.
