About this latest brake recall....

So I finally went to my dealer to find out if my bike needed the brake recall, after checking the VIN it turn out that yes, it affected my bike, so I made an appointment for last friday, took the bike in and after a 2 hour wait I got my bike back...just to find out that the only thing they replace was a "banjo" underneath the gas tank, I was under the impression that the brake lines were to be replace, I mean the brake lines that are visible from the gas tank all the way down to the brake calipers (maybe I'm wrong).

I guess this "banjo" (that's what the service writer call it) can qualify as a brake line????? and he also said that the "banjo" is blue in color to tell it apart from the others........

On the paper work that I got back it only says: 1 Repair Kit For Brake Lines
1 Brake Fluid

and then it says under "Resolution": Performed Brake Line Recall.

I have read "brake lines" (plural) everywhere, so I thought they were to replace all the brake lines...........

what you guys think?

Lates.

I'm not sure about how many lines were to be replaced, but if it was because of a banjo at least that line got replaced. If you happen to be unfamiliar with what a banjo is it the fitting at each end of the brake lines that attach the line to the system and allow for fluid movement/pressurization.

They could have replaced just the banjo as there are kits out there (Spiegler I know for sure maybe others) that allow home mechanics to fab up custom lines. However, I'm doubting BMW would just replace a banjo and not the entire line.

When I had my brake lines replaced a few weeks back I also had them replace the rear brake fluid so that the front and rear would be in sync. Just something to keep in mind.

I brought my 2008 R1200R to my local dealer for the 12,000 miles last week and asked him to check if my bike was part of the front brake line recall.
When I picked up the bike he said my VIN was not effected by the recall. Thinking that all 2008 R1200R bikes were part of the recall I called BMW directly
and had them check on the recall. They said it was not a blanket recall - it was by VIN and my bike was not one of the recalled bikes.
The only thing I can think of is that it had the front brake lines replaced as part of a recall done in 06/23/09.

Has anyone else been told by their dealer that they don't qualify for the recall?

Bill

Think I'm gonna wait until the anniversary of my in-service date in April to have the recall done. With the new brake lines, I'll get a free brake-fluid flush out front, and I'll pay to have the rear fluid flushed at the same time. Although scheduled every two years, I feel better having the fluid flush done annually. Probably won't receive the recall notice until spring anyway.

See, on two of the replies to this tread you guys said "brake lines" (plural) but they only replace one "line" (banjo??) underneath the gas tank on mine :-k and even on the recall notice it says "brake lines" and that's why I was under the impression that they replace more than one brake line, by the way, the service writer gave a copy of the recall (5 pages) and after reading it a couple of times, I think all they are suppose to replace is that one "line" under the gas tank.

When somebody else here gets this recall done, let's see what exactly do they replace, ask your service writer about it, and let us know.

Just received my front brake lines recall notice in the mail today for my 2007 r12r. It states in bold print in what I would describe as the subject area of the letter: "Front Brake Lines" plural. Above that it lists 6 models that the recall effects. In the description of the defect the plural term "lines" is used 4 times. Since the recall notice covers multiple models is it possible that on the r12r only one brake line is affected and more than one brake line is affect on other models? Just a thought. :-k
I have a good working relationship with my dealership so when I have the work done I will try and get some details to share as to what exactly is being done.

I had a brake line recall performed about a month ago, when the dealer did the 6,000 mile service. Yesterday, I received a recall letter from BMW about a brake line replacement. These posts have led me to believe that there are two separate brake line recalls, so I made a trip to the dealer to ask. The dealer told me there is only one brake line recall and my bike has already had it done (the one at the 6,000 mile service).

Have those of you who believe there are two recalls, received two separate recall notifications from BMW? I have only received one.

My bike is a 2009 R1200R, with a build date of September 2008, and I purchased it in February 2010.

Do you have older bikes that had a previous brake line recall that my bike missed because it was built later?

Bill

There are 2 separate brake line recalls. I had my 1st one done a while ago and I got my letter for the 2nd one yesterday.

Is that effective risk management? Just a thought.

I got the dreaded letter yesterday, called my dealer today. She (yes, she, but she rides an HP2S like it was supposed to be ridden) suggested that I wait until my next scheduled service, as the risk of failure is really, really low. I agreed, since I'm pretty sure I'd spot leaking brake fluid if it did start to fail. I'm not at all worried about it.

There's a greater chance of a deer T-boning me between now and April than the brake lines failing, but I hear what you're saying.

I purchaced my 2008 in May, 2008. AT a service in september 2008 the dealer said there was a campain on brake lines. I have never recieved a notice from BMW on that one. Any how they kept my bike for 6 weeks waiting on parts. I sent a note to BMW NA and the very next day my bike was ready. I cannot say they replaced the front line as it had the same date code on it as when I left the bike . However they did Scratch the front master where the lever attatches and stripped the Torque faster out on the front banjo at the fork. And on delivery it had no front braking action. They also replaced all the front fluid with DOT21 atmosphere. So when I got it home I replace the front banjo screw, Installed the brake fluid in the front master, bleed the brakes and wrote on my dry erace board 20 times "The dealer is not always right".
SO today I get the letter. I will inspect my own lines. If one needs fixing I will replace it myself. I know some of you out there may not be so mechanicaly inclined, And some of you blindly believe the brand is above all reproach, But the next time the brake is applied just remember who is pulling the lever. Learn your bike. You will enjoy motorcycling much more.

My 2007 R12R has had 2 brake line recalls. As I understand it the first had to do with a one of the flexible front brake lines and like TAG-Caver it was done months ago. Honestly I do not remember if I received a letter on that one or not. This latest one was done earlier this week. The service manager explained to me that they replaced the two rigid break lines (Item 4 in link below) under the fuel tank between the ABS system and the three way block. The new lines are reinforced with a steel sleeve at the 90 degree bend just before entering the block. He indicated that this was only being done on bikes with ABS. He also stated that they are currently doing the recall on 4 to 5 bikes a day. He said that it seems that BMW just dropped thousands of recall letters in the mail all at the same time. #-o

Just had my second one done last week. Same as Coyote. The rigid line under the tank. I too had the front lines also done a while ago on the first recall. I have to say my front brake lever feels slightly softer than it did. Still works perfectly just feels a little soft. My dealer also topped off and bled my rear brakes also at no charge. Nice of them.
