The RTP trans that isn't an RTP trans

Would you even believe - - !!??
Last year I paid $659 for an RTP transmission.
Wanted the lower 1st gear and the narrower 5 to 6 spread.
Got laid off a little while ago, so finally had time to dig into it
and swap. That is a LOT of work!!
Well, guess what? I got it out on the road and very quickly
discovered it is NOT an RTP trans, it's the same ratios as the
perfectly good stock roadster trans I took out !!
I've emailed the guy, along with a copy of my Paypal payment,
asking him what he's going to do about it.
How much you want to bet absolutely nothing?!
If that IS the case, I WILL spread his name around every place I
can - he's in the BMW salvage parts business.
Why do some people have to be such d@#$&* JERKS!!??
Does anyone have any idea where I can find a REAL RTP / GS Adv
trans?

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. That's a butt load of work for precious little return.
Why don't we build a trebuchet and toss the tranny through the roof of his house from a quarter mile away?

If I was the guy that sold it to you I would tell you that you are welcome to return the one he sold you but you have to remove it from the bike first. I bet that guy never sells anything but "RTP" transmissions because the market is so much bigger if you just claim that the transmission is an RTP. Plus I imagine there are very few RTP transmissions floating around. I suspect RTP's are a tiny fraction of all R1150's in the first place and I wouldn't be surprised if a transmission in a retired RTP is pretty much shot in the majority of cases.
I'm in on building a trebuchet. A few years back I bought a self-published book with a title along the lines of "Heavy Artillery for the Apocolypse", a garage door spring and a come-along several years ago with the thought of building one but plans are cheap and follow-through is expensive so it never happened. (Although if I was using a garage door spring I suppose I was actually building a catapult which is just a cop-out but my heart was in the right place.)
That totally blows that you went to all that effort to replace a perfectly good stock transmission with an identical perfectly good stock transmission. In all that time you could have built a trebuchet.

I like the way you think.
I'd do it all over again if I could actually find one, tho.
Got the learning curve behind me, and am starting on building
my lift today, soooo much easier than getting up off the ground
so many times!
Another, possibly less abused source, might be out of GS Adv models.
They have the same deep 1 & 6 gears. Or at least some do.
Wouldn't it be nice to get lucky and find somebody with one of those
that wants a taller 6th gear? Probly - "in my dreams"
Trouble is, even with a new one at ~$3500 it's STILL less outlay than
upgrading to a good used 1200 :-(

Look at it this way: now you don't have to worry about input shaft spline failure since you've got a spare!

Yeah, now I've got 2 transmissions that I don't want. How lucky.
Of course, the guy wouldn't do anything, said he was "sorry it wasn't
what I wanted" but - - .
So still trying to find one. Told him to put me on his list for a REAL one.
Any tips on where to look appreciated. A GS Adv trans is also the low gear
one.

You may want to note the ratios of 1st and 6th gear now that you have a spare trans sitting on your work bench. Just count how many turns of the input shaft it takes to turn the output shaft once. You can do the same with next trans, when or if you get one.
Just as a side note...my brother has an R1150RTP (forget what year), and the gear ratio (1st gear) noted in his spec sheet is the same as my 2004 R1150R. The final drive gear ratio however, is different. I'm sure you did your research.

Yes, I did research it, and what I had found prior to buying that trans was
that RTP and GS Adv bikes had the low 1 & 6 trans. Nothing to indicate
that RTP bikes could have either one.
Since then I've discovered that the online parts fiche for RT bikes could have either the regular trans or this low ratio trans, altho it doesn't differentiate RT from RTP bikes or specify which gets what, or if it's part of the time or all of the time.
The GS Adv fiche says sports transmission with low 1st + 6th
In the trans breakdown in the RT fiche, it lists 2 different 6th gears, the "short" 6th with 29 teeth and the "long" 6th with 30 teeth, but it doesn't
break down different 1st gears. That could imply that 1st is the same in
both versions, but going back to the trans unit listing it does specify
the sport or enduro version having "short 1st+6th".
Anyway, whatever the case, I've got a standard roadster / RT ratio trans
It was black, but regular RT trans are black, too, from what I've seen.
So still looking for a GS Adv or RTP "short 1st+6th" trans.
