hi all,
new member here. put down deposit a 03 r1150r abs s/ factory heated grips, luggage, windscreen, corbin low seat and then some just yesterday!!
will pick up the r on monday after the current owner taking it in for the final annual checkup this weekend.
have a quick question though. the r now has cracked handgrips. i am wondering where i can get a set of grips for the r (ebay search result shows a new set for $40 free shipping) and how much time it takes to install. i've done something similar on my suzuki katana b4 but not sure if the r is any difference since it's a beemer with heated grips and all. any tips/suggestions?
thx
dean

You get what you pay for. New OE replacements are $130 each. Bargain grips might well be cheap... caviat emptor.
Replacement process is not to bad. You must remember to extract the machine screws that fasten left grip to handlebar, and there's some fiddling with the hand controls module on both sides. This is also one project that absolutely requires tank removal, but that's a good experience for all oilhead owners.

Something to consider..
When the grips are cracked or worn, but the heating elements still work, you can change the rubber grip without replacing the entire heated grip assembly. You need two right-hand grips (ask your BMW dealership) which should run you around 20-30 bucks. Then just cut the old grips off and slide the new ones on. You have to be careful, of course, not to damage the elements under the grips, or the wires that run to the end of the heating element, but it's possible, I did it on mine. Its relatively simple, and saves you quite a bit of money.
When I change the grips again from wear, I'll replace the whole unit, but I won't have a choice this next time, but that's a side effect of using gasoline as a lubricant for something rubber.

Sorry, it's two throttle-side grips...to two right hand grips. My mistake.

There is only one set of BMW part numbers for the actual rubber grips. Since most BMW's use the same grips, a dealer should have some is stock. I just went to Ironhorse BMW here in Tucson, asked them for two right hand grips, and they went to the back for a bit and came back with both of them. No waiting, no fuss, was out the door in under 5 minutes (any longer and I start looking at the bikes and I don't want to drool on anything).

Right. "Grip Puppies" I bought mine from California Sport Touring. They work great and don't interfere with the heated grips.
