BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

In June 2008, I got into an accident and was grounded by my wife. At that point of time, I put Stabil in the gas tank, filled it up and left it in the garage.

Now it is 26 months later and I would like to bring the bike into running condition.

It is a 2004 R1150R ABS with just 6000 miles. It has not been serviced since the 600 miles service. I replaced the battery with a new one and the bike started promptly.

I am guessing that I need to perform the following maintenance operations before I can safely ride the bike.

0) Tire pressure (duh!)
1) Oil and filter change
2) Gearbox oil change
3) Final drive oil change
4) Air filter change
5) Brake fluid change
6) Clutch fluid change
7) Valve clearance adjustment
8 ) Throttle body sync

Do you recommend anything else that I should be looking at?

Also - this bike has ABS, so the Brake fluid change *must be* performed by BMW dealer. Is that correct or can I talk to the generic motorcycle mechanic down the street? Or even use a brake fluid bleeding tool and try to do this by myself?

Thoughts? Advice?

The bike was stored in a cold garage in Syracuse weather - does this have any impact on anything?

You have done your homework.....I would add:

Check the tires for cracking/weathering
Throw some SeaFoam on the first two or three fuel tanks

The generic motorcycle mechanic likely won't be familiar with the BMW iABS servo brake system... but who knows? Ask him if he's ever done one.

It is much more involved than most motorcycle braking systems.

This is the ABS service write-up that I did. You will see what I'm talking about. Since your bike is well past the service deadline... the addendum is the procedure that you should follow. I haven't finished the addendum. I've been procrastinating. Maybe, I should get started on that...

Most "generic motorcycle mechanic's" will refuse to change fluid on the BMW abs system (unless they have some experience on BMW's). Most places won't even bleed the brakes, so getting them to pump and flush the system is usually out of the question. Luckily, if it's just a brake job that you have to take it to the dealership for, you won't be digging into your retirement fund to pay for it...just your kid's college funds.


You could try the fluid change and bleed yourself if you're up to it. Its not impossible, just time consuming. If you've got the tools for it, and some degree of mechanical aptitude, then go for it. Its one less thing you have to pay someone else to do.
