Ohlins Shock Question
I have ohlins shocks front and rear on an R1100R. The front shock started making a noise similar to a spring squeaking. On a recent ride I noticed the noise is becoming more noticeable. It's most noticeable when putting the bike on and off the centerstand (I think this is due to the shock extending and compressing), but can also be heard while riding down the road. My question is, is this a sign that the shock needs rebuilt? I'm fairly sure it's not the spring because when the noise first started I thought it was the spring and replaced it with a new one. Any advise will be very much appreciated, especially from someone who has experienced the same noise and knows what the fix is. Thanks, Jim
Re: Ohlins Shock Question
Whooot? You replaced the spring on an Oehlins shock just because the shock started making some funny noise? How did you do that? In order to change the spring the shock needs to be dismantled which is not a simple task (without the necessary tools) ... And where did you get a new Oehlins spring from? Did you order this from Oehlins (or an oehlins dealer)?
I don't think this is due to a defect of the shock. Maybe the mountpoint of the shock at the telelever? Try to apply some spray-oil on the mountpoints. You could also spray some teflon oil on the damping rod. Then see if the noise disappears.
Best regards

Re: Ohlins Shock Question
Yes,I replaced the spring after I tried lubricating contact points and replaced the bushings at the top of the shock where the threaded stem passes through the frame. None of those things helped. I bought the spring from a dealer. The yellow coating on the original spring had come off at the end of the coil, and all though I had lubricated it, the spring continued to make the squeaking noise. I finally resolved that if it qwacks like a duck or in this case squeaks like a spring that it must be the spring. Unfortunately I was wrong. As a`side note, when I had the old spring off I worked the piston in and out and there was no noise. Another reason why I thought it was the spring. That's why I'm at a lose now.
Re: Ohlins Shock Question
Hi,
in my opinion it would have been easier (and cheaper) to get the damper to your nearest service point and get it checked or overhauled. The cost for this is relatively small.
If the noise is not caused by the damper itself nor by the spring (as you have diagnosed) then it can be only one of the mountpoints or the a-arm itself. Maybe also the ball-bearing at the a-arm?
A stethoscope or something alike might serve you well to locate the noise or the source. Get some other person to sit on the bike and then start locating ...
