I'm curious when BMW releases the 2011 models?? I see the cruisers are out just in time for Sturgis.

I dont think you are going to see anything different apart from the new twin cam in all bikes, and new colours.

Really, no news at BMW for 2011?

My dealer.....Pandora's Eurpoean Motorsports in Chattanooga Tn (great group BTW) said they can't order a 2011 R1200R as they don't have a production date yet; which is unusual as they always have it by now. They're suspecting the R1200R might not be built for 2011 or will be late in production.

My understanding is that R1200R production has been discontinued.

Certainly 2010 production has stopped. Anything built after Sept 1st would be considered a 2011 bike (at least in the US..) And given how BMW builds models in 'batches' - I doubt that the first batch off the line for 2011 models will be the R1200R, but I also bet there is a scheduled production run (once they make a bunch of GS's so they can meet demand for the HumVee of BMWs.. )

And your source for this info? (It sounds like the usual dealer blather.. but 'ya never know..) I can't imagine BMW not bringing it into the US if they're making it - it was actually selling reasonably well.

The way I read that is that the R1200R will be manufactured in 2011 but will still be called a 2010. Am I getting that right?

The way I read that is that he doesn't have any information about the 2011 R1200R model yet.

The way I read, "The following models will keep their current Model Year designation with no changes to options or packages..."

It will be a 2011 R1200R, but with no changes from the 2010. Me thinks they're waiting to see how the DOHC works out before putting it into the Roadster. They are currently running it on a touring bike and jeep. If it does that well, maybe they'll add it to the best bike they make.

When I was shopping around this spring all the dealers here in the Midwest told me the R12R production was suspended for ramping up of the S1000RR. Just biding my time and hopefully soon a t-cam version will come out. If not I just put 1100 miles on in Wisconsin running all over that fine state. I love my 09 leftover.

There will be new R1200R bikes with the DOHC engine for the new season.
Should be released in october in cologne or november at the milan show...
Wonder if they also bring a replacement for the defunct R1200S/ST

Taking that as definitive, let me hijack the thread. In what way is a dohc engine superior to what we have? More complexity, certainly, so what about reliability? Will we get more power?

Just speculating..

1. The potential is there for more power, but the current models are very close in hp/torque to the hexhead engine. There is some improvement in lower RPM torque, and apparently fuel mapping - giving a smoother low speed response (a good thing..) The HP2 uses this design and does produce significantly more power then a hexhead engine.

2. The valve adjustment is moved from an easy DIY - to one requiring a shim kit (but still IMHO - an easy DIY if you have the kit.) My expectation (based on the same sort of valve adjustment/lifter/rocker assembly on my two M cars) is that the adjustment interval will be much longer then the current scheme. Right now AFAIK - they still call for a valve clearance check at 6k intervals (10km), but I expect that people are finding they stay in adjustment once the initial adjustment is made much longer. (On my M cars - both with S54 engines - the adjustment interval is 30-35k miles.) Since the valve clearance check is no different or more difficult then the hexhead engines, it does make sense to keep any eye on it at 6k intervals at least for the first 30-40k miles. If it is at all like the car engines - once they settle in - they stay good for a LONG time.

3. It also gives BMW bragging rights - as their first boxer DOHC engine. It sounds modern, and that helps sell bikes.

I was going to say in my post that it sounds sexy. I'd be tempted to trade in my crystal grey 2007 R12R for one with tpm and stability control--black with stripes or white, mostly for the bragging rights on the dohc.

I think there's probably a market for faux DOHC valve covers much like the faux fender vents all the kids stuck on their civics and mitsubishis to mimic the E46 M3.

Don. Did you ever have to do anything concerning the catastrophic engine failure recall in the S54? Mine was produced June 2003 which was the first failure free month. I got the 100,000 mile warranty but I never had to have the recall work done on it.
