I have just purchased a 2001 R1150R and love it. Does anyone spin the bike around 180 on one leg of the centre stand. I used to do this with my old R45 a long time ago. Or am I asking for trouble?

I tried that last year after I buried my R in the garage while preparing to move. Although I was able to tolerate the sound of grinding concrete and steel, my little brain soon realized that the wobbly center stand was not built to perform that maneuver on a regular basis.

I'm assuming "spin" is a figure of speech. I'm pretty cautious about it, but I've always turned center stand bikes, usually in 180's, on a decent concrete floor, to get them headed out the shop.

No. The stand will almost certainly bend or break.
Can't you put it on one of those turntable things?

I've always turned my bikes on their center stands, including my r1150r. I don't do a whole lot of 180's or anything, but I certainly wouldn't hesitate to do it. I turn it about 20 or 30 degrees every day I ride it (it really helps with the 2 bikes and 1 car arrangement... in a 1 car garage). Now, 6 years later, the stand is as solid as it was when it was new. Normally, I don't worry about heavy steel (like that stand) bending or breaking.

Come to think of it, my BMW dealer demonstrated center-stand-turning to me the day I took ownership of my new bike. There is no need to tip it onto one leg. That would just make it less stable. All you need is decent piece of level pavement.

My dealer did the same, but I have a finished garage floor and this method would tear it up pretty good, here is what I did, I went to a building center (lowes, homedepot) and purchased a large lazey susan unit cheap, that and a piece of 1/4 in plywood works great, you can spin it with your little finger,

I used to do it with My R and as long as the concrete is silky smooth no problem. I would think rough concrete would act like a cheese grater on the stand feet.
