BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

New member just registered. I live in the UK. Im just about to go out on my first ride of my newly aquired 2004 R1150R after spending the last 4 years mauling with a k1200rs, (after having enough of hauling around its 285Kgs)

It has the pannier rails and a silver plastic rack fitted, want to replace it with a topcase rack. Does anyone know if BMW do a fitting that connects to the rails or is there an aftermarket part available. If so do they still leave enough room for the pillion?
I have an autocom intercom system which i want to hardwire. Can anyone advise what is the most suitable location for the control box and where a live connection can be found.

Welcome Pete! I'm fairly new here myself and the amount of knowledge
that the guys here have is incredible! I'm sure you'll get an answer to your problems.
I use the OEM 'soft' top case on mine and find it very useful as it can be removed with a turn
of the key. I think, if you're wanting a hard case you may be looking at something like
a Givi.
P.S. If your silver coloured rack ever becomes redundant, mine has a blemish and I'm on the
look-out for another!

Just back from first proper ride, covered 100mls.
after a multi, the twin seems lumpy and Im experiencing significant vibes through the pegs above 4000 rpm, although the mirrors remain blur free. Is this normal, the bike has 16000 mls on the clock? Its just had the throttles balanced at a main dealers.

The gear change is great very positive, finding works best with just a little wind off of throttle compared to a multi. Also feel a slight sideways shimmy through the bars when I blip the throttle when changing down the gears.

The handing is excellent, it has new dunlop roadsmarts on which seem to work very well. and Im already aquainted with the brilliant brakes the same were on my previous k12rs.

The Hepco Becker rack does what you seek, at least for my RR. You can see pictures of it in my ride reports. I have used it for a few years now and it has held up very well. Just bought a pelican case insert and will convert it to a camera case on the bike. I have modified the top half of its clamshell design to carry my laptop and first aid kit, and there is still room to spare. I think I have the 41L case.

The Autocom can be wired a number of ways. If you want a switched intercom, then tap into the rear tail light (running light) wire for power to the Autocom. This is the preferred way of Autocom. Or you can add a fuse box to the bike and have it switched. My Autocom Pro is mounted in the rear compartment, Velcro it in place to prevent movement. Route the wires along the right side frame and wire tie them to prevent the seat latch from tearing them up. Bring the rider 7 pin connection up in front of the seat between the tank and seat. It makes it easier to disconnect when getting on and off. I have BTB, MP3, Cell and GPS running all at the same time. You will be very happy with the Autocom, follow their instruction exactly and you will be fine.

I have the BMW tail rack and side case rails as well, I run the BMW side cases and have an S48 Coocase ( Twisted Throttle) mounted to the top of the BMW rack. It fits my XXXL helmet, gloves and Darien Jacket. The BMW rack make an excellent base for mounting a GIVI as well. My daughter likes riding with the trunk ( back rest) and the side cases ( leg rests), plus the rails have hand holds for grabbing onto. To remove the tail rack you will need to see if short spacers will be needed to properly fit the side case bracket rear mounting screws. I don't believe there is a simple grab bar like the 1100's had.

Thanks for the info, Autocom now fitted. I took the live from the tail light as suggested and used one of the front seat mounting bracket pins as an earth. Autocom now housed under the tank above the air filter alongside the meta alarm, a snug fit and with all teh wires tie wrapped to the frame its a neat job. On negative side is Pillion has probs with wind noise at anything above 60mph.
