I've got issues!!!!

My Bike is running horribly. It will not idle and runs really "jittery". The first 3 gears run really high RPM, but after I get to 4-6 it runs a little better, but still sluggish. While taking it for a shorter ride to see if it might have been bad gas I noticed my Catalytic converter was cherry red hot after holding it idle for about 5 min. Is this normal? After the ride I accidentally left running lights on for a couple of hour and had to recharge battery, not sure if it is related, but figured I would thorw it out there just in case,. After the recharge is when I notice bike running sluggish. Checked all lines under tank and did not notice any kinks. Any ideas? My guess is a bad Caty, but not 100%. thought I would see if anyone else has see this before.
Thanks in advance
Scott

Just a guess, but check both throttle cables and make sure they are seated in the adjusters at the throttle bodies.

Good idea from WorkingMan...
Don't let an air cooled bike run at idle for 5 minutes either. That is really, really bad for it.

Yep I bet it's the right one that is off its seat.

You don't make mention of the year, model and mileage on te bike, so it's difficult to diagnose, but check the following:
1) If it is a 4 plug, check the stick coils as they go bad with continued exposure to heat
2) Also check for leaks at the TB to head joint as the O-rings tend to harden and allow air to leak into the combustion chamber leaning the A/F mixture.
Of course, I'm assuming the bike is in a reasonable state of tune.
The suggestion about the throttle cable(s) being seated in the adjustors is a good one, however, if that were the case, it would be a chore to get te bike started.
Good luck and keep us posted
