had to say goodby to my '87 r80.
i do like the new one. boo coo power and quite civilized. one thing, the seat...90 mi. ride home...not the most comfortable . as a matter of fact, the r80's seat was more suited to my 63 year old butt.

in any case, has anybody replaced their r1200r seat? if so, with what?
the directional switch logic is a bit wierd, also.

no luggage. i'm thinking a tank bag will be adaquate when needed. i would like somewhere to store a tool or two.

Congrats on the bike! I kinda figured the R80 would become history (with good memories).

As far as seats - you might try searching here a bit. There are LOTS of aftermarket seat options, most have been very thoroughly discussed.

I find the luggage gets used almost every time I use the bike.. wouldn't be without it. I carry my briefcase to work in one, carry spare clothing when riding, and use them fully packed when touring. IMHO - the luggage is one of the reasons to own a BMW. If you're just doing day rides - then there would be a lot less of a need. Tools aren't all that needed on these bikes - you might consider a tire repair kit of some type and something like an Airman compressor though.

There are probably more seat options for this bike than for any other bike besides a Harley. BMW themselves make six different seats, two of them are even supposed to be comfortable. Then you have Sargent, Corbin and Mayer doing aftermarket seats, and probably others.

It's not all that weird if you think about it. The up down action of most other bikes copy the action of turn signals of autos. So that action is ingrained into your nervous system after doing it for many years. But if you never drove a car and had to start using turn signals from scratch left to go left and right to go right would be the easiest way for you. Hence BMW's way is the most logical. It'll become second nature to you before you realize it.
The seat is a pain to most R12 owners. I got an air hawk and put a sheepskin over that. It's removed the "Darn this seat" feeling after a long ride for me.
You're going to find the R12 gets better the longer you have it. It's all got to do with some force that comes down to us from somewhere in the universe. It's futile to try to understand it. Just enjoy the ride.

As for the seat, I went with the BMW leather comfort saddle, low. $541.

thanks for the help, gents. the old goo has 3600 hours sitting on these butt busters,(even used it twice) so i'll see if i can get used to it.if not, l'll take the recommendations i got here.

Congrats on your new bike! Can't comment on new seats as mine came with the "comfty" seat from BMW and so far I am very happy with it.
