Well !

I wonder if the mechanic expert & members of our great forum could tell me if it would damage R1200R engine, gear box and shaft if it was use on a specially designed sort of boat...using the rear wheel spinning to convert its energy and power a small boat propeller.

A bit like the old Velosolex mopeds were powered in the past... by a rubber pad spinning against the front wheel if I remember the one of my father in the 70's.

humm humm.... the idea would be to be able to quickly park and slide the motorcycle on some sort of dock on the boat...and in 2 or 3 adjustments being able to power the boat.

I am serious ! but let's say...
that was also a bit of my Friday evening "cerebral exhaust" !

Well, you have to keep it cool somehow. That would mean a short free-board to get enough air flow to the engine.

Then, parking a 500 lb motorcycle on a boat and then sitting on it, may make a rather unstable boat.

If you try this, be sure and get video so we can watch the outcome.

and Yes for sure...the speed compare to the energy produced might not be enough to cool the engine but the engine can also power a series of fans in addition to the propeller. weight indeed can be an issue but not sure if it is really a big one... the entire boat must be design around the bike. also for the stability.

Fredr, here's another slant on a R12 water bike. A surf board model. I can give you the idea but an engineer would be needed to make it all come together. The vehicle would be the R12 with a half surf board mounted above the tail rack at an angle of 45 deg. To enter the water would necessitate a moving launch from a dock that's about one to five feet above the water. When airborne the surf board would be pulled into action coming to rest under the rear wheel. Also while air borne the driver would have to make sure he had set the center stand down. This would be the dam that would keep the surf board from shooting ahead of the vehicle. On the board would be a channel which the rear tire set into. In the channel would be a direct drive mechanism to a squirrel cage type propeller. This operation would obviously have to take place in reverse gear so as to propel the board up against the center stand. This is accomplished by a C shaped piece ahead of the sq. cg. prop., which would thus provide thrust in the opposite direction, thus propelling the R12 water bike forward. There would be no need to worry about balance. This design is for a moving vehicle only. To end the ride you'd need to approach a fairly level beach and reverse the launching procedure. Just an idea.

OTOH, since the direct DNA lineage of the boxer engine is from aircraft engines, you could add a Rogallo wing setup with a quick-connect frame and make a flying RR. Some homebuilders have already used old oilhead engines for homebuilts.

Besides, having a commercial pilots license, that kind of appeals to me instead of another boat project: Been there, done that, got that tee shirt. Definitely a hole in the water into which went a whole lot of money.

I think perhaps a paddle-wheeler. With paddle-wheels on both sides. You could design it so you could attach the bags as pontoons off to each side on outriggers. As the bags come from BMW they are water-tight, but if you modified them like I did (tiny hole drilled in the inner liner so vacuum didn't build up and keep it from opening) you could always fill them with ping-pong balls. That solves the balance problems.

Make the paddle-wheeler a ride on where the centerstand is clamped to the deck, and the rear-wheel rests on a roller that has a shaft through it to drive the paddle wheels. Only thing - I haven't quite figured out how you'd steer it - but perhaps if the front wheel clamped in a vice that had a vertical shaft attached to a rudder below the boat - you could use the bars.

If you need engineering drawings that will be extra..

PS: I have a spare set of bag mounts that I could sell you to use for attaching the bags to the pontoons.

and I still agree it was a weird question.
But I am lurking a lot on buying a boat these days....and was trying to IMAGINE a way to use my motorcycle for something useful instead of leaving her alone on a parking while I am in the boat.

There is a small Italian company that make the same type of boat for mountain bikes...its inflatable floaters attached to a structure & propeller on which you just strap the bicylce on. riders can carry it in a small backpack.

Sitting on my bike I do many things already... work on my computer, picnic facing the ocean, play music and collect phone numbers of smiling girls walking slowly...and....its lunch time... so ! I prefer to stop listing here.

I Still think it's possible and would be cool to design a boat that will convert the power of a motorcycle. Just to fooocking piss off all the testosterone addicted & ultra way too too serious motorcycle riders "intelligentsia" !
