Horny question....

Now I have your attention

What is the current rating of the standard horn circuit?
If I want to fit, say a Stebel Nautilus Compact, would I need to wire in a separate relay?
I probably would anyway as I don't want to risk damaging the loom.

I believe you would have to rewire with the relay that comes with the Stebel

One of my half-done projects is the Stubel horn install. I have a AP-2 fuse panel in place and have run the wires, but haven't hooked it all up yet. I think the common opinion here is to use #16 wire for the power triggered by the relay. I think I used #14, but I'm an extremest. The horn wires look like #22 or something, way too small to power the Stubel compressor, I don't think you'd harm the wiring, but the horn fuse would blow pretty quick I think.
The good news for the project is that I bought a car to drive to work, so the bike doesn't have to be available 365 days a year. Maybe I can get it finished now.
Good luck with it, that horn is an SUV killer.

Good question!
The horn fuse is the 4th from the left which I believe is good for 14 or 15 amps (it also supplies the Aux. receptacle down by your left foot if you've got one).
The Stebel Nautilus draws 18 amps and comes with a 30 amp relay that you should use...

OK! Thanks guys! Relay it is then! Plenty of room under the seat to tuck that away.
@Airman: Just as a matter of interest, where did you mount your Nautilus?

I used the stock mount in the original location. If you don't have the ABS module it will fit nicely in there as well. I didn't have that option.

I have ABS. I mounted the Stebel where the stock horn was. The nautilus will fit.
I used their relay, wired directly to the battery on the one side, and to the existing horn circuit on the other side.

What did you use for a bracket to mount the Stebel? Do you have a picture of the mounting?

I'll have to take a picture one of these days. Just so you know, there are times when it hits the front fender, but overall it works fine.
