Rode to work this morning, no problem. Left work, no problem. Rode to get a juicy burger, no problem. Went to go home, lights came on, but went off with a nasty-sounding click. $70 to get her home. From what I read, it's time for a new battery. The tow truck dude was pretty amazed that it had lasted this long in the Texas heat.

I've looked over some of the 800-some-odd posts on the issue, and I don't have the patience to read them all. What is the best replacement battery for an R1200R?

I know you'll get much more informed responses, but when in a travel situation on the R, I just went to the closest MC dealer, they looked up my bike, and sold me some sealed battery that they filled for me. About $140.
Works great.

I bought a Yuasa YTX14-BS from eBay, 78.00, with shipping it was 85.00. No problems. Later I found that there is a YTX14H-BS, a heavy duty version. I would have bought that one if I'd known about it.

Hey you guys, how old were your bikes/batteries?

I've had a good experience with the Odyssey. More oomph that the stock Exide. Only problem is that it requires some customization to fit.

Oh... sorry, but I replaced mine preemptively and so I don't have a cool picture of my bike on a nifty trailer to share!

To think I purposefully avoided taking pictures of my bike on a tow truck because that is not how I want to remember her. I caught a huge piece of glass with the back tire. Thankfully it went flat over night and was discovered the next morning. BMW towed my bike to the nearest shop for free, had to pay for the new tire.

+1. The added starting power makes me happy. Making it fit took something around 1-2 hours. I don't have experience with other replacements though.
I also swapped it out before the old one died. At that time the OEM battery had over three years on it.

Three years, six months on mine, Bruce. Texas is hard on motorcycle batteries; we had a record-tying hot spell last summer. You should do better up there in the frigid north.

The reflectors are held on with 2-face foam tape... not hard at all to remove if you want the "euro" look. (I never bothered but one came off on my R1150RS - and I removed the other one instead of paying for a new reflector.)

Oh - on topic - I replaced my battery when it was about 3 years, 2 months old (bike built 10/06 - I replaced it 01/10).. and I did this premptively, no failure but it seemed to be cranking a bit slower. The old battery has been on my Optimate charger/maintainer since then and looks just fine. Gotta do a load test on it sometime and see.. I put the Yuasa in (got a deal from my friendly going out of business dealer.. $40..)

Battery no 1 was a couple of months old. Battery no 2 was around 8 months old. Both replaced under warranty.

Two and a half year for mine.
But no tow truck. BMW service car came on a Sunday morning and we could start our little tour with 90 min delay.

I've been paranoid about the "sudden battery death syndrome" afflicting my bike, so I went to pick up a new Odyssey battery. The new battery is on the back seat. Turns out I should have picked up a new fuel pump instead...

Bummer about the fuel pump.
