BMW R1200R R1150R/T F800 K1200R R1100R/T R1250R RnineT Message Board

Hello everyone. I am a new R1200R owner. I recently purchased a used 2007 model. It came with a tank bag and since it has 'R1200R' embossed on it, I would assume it's a tank bag made by BMW specifically for this bike. My only problem is, I cannot figure out how to attach the bag to the bike. The bag has two attachment points, one on the front of the bag and the other on the rear.

At the front of the bag there is a triangular metal piece that is permanently attached to the bag.

At the rear of the bag is a rather strange looking device that is comprised of two quick release tabs along with another metal piece that is itself attached to a piece of cloth padding and a piece of velcro.

I'm wondering if perhaps there are more bits and pieces that weren't included with the bag.

I simply haven't a clue as to how to attach this bag and would welcome any help from the good folks on this forum.

Sounds like you're missing some straps... my guess, anyway.

Could you post a photo and I'll check if it's the same as mine.

I beleive this piece hooks under the gas tank. The velcro is to keep it from sliding back and forth. It is not really necessary. Mine didn't stick anyway. The front triangular piece hooks under the little metal tab in front of the tank with the serial # on it. I believe. Good luck. It should come to you. It is a piece of cake.

The triangular metal piece in the front does not hook to the tank, there is a flange in front of the tank (under the bars)

Scroll dowmn on the items on the left side of the screen until you come to the tank bag, Double click on it and it will show you the parts as well as a pic of it on a bike..

I suppose while I'm at it, what is the general consensus on the bag itself? Will it keep things dry inside during a day of riding in the rain? And I noticed that inside there is a drawstring, which I guess is used to help in that regard, but what about the four 'loops' in each corner?

So many questions for such a simple device. I apologize for all the questions but I'm keen on using the bag.

And again, thanks to all for the help. This my first post and I'm grateful for the info. It's great to be a part of this forum.

Actually - mine wasn't (one of the several reasons I sold it..) The hookie thing that went under the number plate had to be wedged under it, scratching the metal number plate, and leaving bare metal (which we know is an invitation to rust.) The rear part - that attaches via Velcro to the tank, didn't want to stay attached, and the front rubber bumper on the seat seemed to gradually pull the industrial Velcro loose.

I wasn't terribly impressed with the entire bag. The black hole effect was the final straw - anything put in the bag got to meet anything else that was put in the bag, and it all ended up in a lumpy mass in the bottom of the bag. Routing around to find anything usually involved taking everything out of the bag, and if I recall - the map pocket wouldn't take a standard US map folded along the normal fold lines.

The RKA has been much more functional, although I do once in a while allow my wandering eye to espies other bags and consider getting them.

the loops in the corners of the bag are to roll up the rain cover and stowe in out of the way. I like mine but have to admit I only use it for trips, not for my every day commute. I found on my last bike using a tank bag every day causes scuffs, etc.
small tail box works good for every day, Just an opinion

Don, The rear part has Velcro that is supposed to keep the strap from moving from side to side. What holds the bag down and tight is a hook, sort of like the front one that goes under the rear of the tank near where the seat meets the tank.

I like my tank bag allot. It is a rare thing for me to NOT have the tank bag on the bike. No tank scratches in three years so far.
It can be a black hole but it is capacious and pretty water proof. I keep lots of camping necessities in it all the time.

@Zedman --> I cannot find any picture of this dedicated BMW R1200R tank bag you mentioned in your thread...
do you have pictures ?

Meanwhile I am in the process to get a tank bag because my summer jacket will not have the large amount of convenient pockets that my Revi't cayenne jacket provide... and even filling the pockets of gears on such jacket can slightly compromising the internal airflow while riding.

So ! I was wondering if someone knew a tank bag that could look even more discreet almost like a business suitcase than the RKA model I have found on their website... I am trying to avoid looking too much like a biker when I show up somewhere...not sure if it is really work because I wear a cayenne revi't everyday but at least I am all black, no Castrol or Motul signs on me and comfortably I don't carry any helmet, gloves or balaclava's with me as everything is in my luggages .... only my hopefully discreet tank bag during summertime.


What else in the market is discreet and minimal ?
compare to this 16 liter RKA tank bag...any recommendations ?

The transparent map sleeve is removable which make it even more discreet...
and my netbook will even fit in it.
