Runs better in cold than warm weather ? ? ?

Post by CordovaJohn »

My 2004 R1150R runs like a bat out of Hades in colder weather (50F and below) but in 75F weather is does not accelerate as good. Not a big difference, but noticeably just not as fun. Have new stick coils and had injectors cleaned and verified (supposedly). New plugs, been synced, etc. Humidity does not seem to be involved.

Any ideas? - Help would be appreicated.
Thanks,
John

First, it is somewhat normal. The colder air is more dense, therfore has a greater amount of oxygen per unit of volume. The computer then gives a slightly larger squirt of gasoline to match the greater amount of oxygen.

more fuel+more oxygen=more power

Many of us notice this. It is more noticeable in motorcycles than our cars because because the much better power to weight ratios of motorcycles. So what you notice may be completely normal.

Second, the bike may ping when it is hot out, and not pinging when cool out. The pinging may not be audible. I run 92 octane when it hot out, 89 octane when it is cooler. This might help, or it might not, depending on what fuel you've been using.

Third, if it is a big difference. The temperature sensor, that the computer uses to estimate how much fuel to dispense, could be faulty. To tell you the truth, I can't remember where it is exactly...probably in the air box, maybe in the snorkel, or under the air box. I don't recall anybody else ever having an issue with the temp. sensor.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

The temperaure sensor is screwed on the air filter cover and measures the temperature of the air going to the engine.
