Oil Filter Wrench
Does any one no if there is a difference between the BMW oil filter wrench priced at $30.00 as compared to the an aftermarket oil filter wrench for about $5. The $30.00 oil filter wrench by BMW looks "gold" in color, Just wondering if it is made better or has a more precise fit on a oil filter. All comments welcomed.

Re: Oil Filter Wrench
I got the BMW aluminum wrench for $24 from the dealer, the after market ones for the R1150R are stamped metal, they should work the same.davidh8462 wrote:Does any one no if there is a difference between the BMW oil filter wrench priced at $30.00 as compared to the an aftermarket oil filter wrench for about $5. Re: Oil Filter Wrench
I bought a plastic one at O'Reilly's, took a filter and fitted it to make sure I got the right one from a selection
of several sizes, if I recall just a few $ - maybe $5 or so? There was a little lip on the outside on the open end I took off, can't remember if I used a file or a grinder. No major problem, sure worth the price diff.
Has worked fine for a year. Has a 3/8" drive square hole for a ratchet.

Re: Oil Filter Wrench
You could take the "gold" BMW wrench and wear it for bling? The parts store one offers zero class!
Re: Oil Filter Wrench

I believe the BMW filter wrench is made by Hazet (pn# 2169) at approximately €14 each. Any thin wall filter wrench with 74mm across the flats and 14 flutes will do the job. Personally I am using a KTC without a problem.

Hazet 2169 on the left, KTC AVSA-074 on the right

Re: Oil Filter Wrench
You could go the KN-163 route and use a socket or wrench.

I pick them up from Happy Trails, a local shop, for about $10.00 ea.

You can get a set of three different fitments from Harbor Freight for about $10, or if you want a single one it can be sorced at Wally Mart also for about $5.

Re: Oil Filter Wrench
I got one of the cheapo ones from Wal-mart; spent about and hour or more grinding it down all even and neat. It cracked the first time I used it, so I went and got the expensive one... there being no oil in my m/c by this point. It has served me well for a half dozen changes since, wipes clean with a rag, and still shines (well, it's sort of silver colored).
So much to do, so little time.

Re: Oil Filter Wrench
Since I am using AmsOil filters, I got the filter wrench from AmsOil, for 3 bucks.
It required 3/8 drive, so I plugged it with the flat head bolt and and secured it with two 17mm nuts.
Worked well for me for the last 7 years.
If I would own a business of changing the oil, I would spend 50 dollars on the wrench, no problem.
For occasional use, 3 dollars cup will do the job fine.
It takes a couple of minutes to take the filter off and less than a minute with the good golden wrench.
I really do not make $47.00 in 2 minutes.
What ever you choose, will take the filter off, at least couple of times.
Good Luck.

I use one of these $10 3 prong wrenches from Autozone that adapt to the size of the filter, it fits a bit tight up in the filter area but has worked so far for me.
