I'm thinking about after market suspension, and I'm trying to put together a list of options. Anyone with experience that wants to comment, feel free!

I have the Wilbers front and rear, they made the biggest difference in the ride quality. At 25000 the stockers jumped all over the road. I also went the extra for the adjustable rear, I ride solo 100% of the time so I wouldn't go that route again. The Wilbers and the Olins are top notch but I found a deal on Wilbers. Check around on various BMW forums and look for a group deal.

There is one other thing to be said for Wilburs.....they will make the shocks shorter to get you flat footed. My friend Buddy, with the 1200 GS which some of you have met in a couple of the Bashes has a 1/2" shorter set an he loves tem.

The only caveat is that he had to cut down his center stand as getting the bike on the center stand was a 2 person ordeal, no problems with the side stand.

Talk to Ted Porter at the Beemershop in Ca. He will give you an education--one that is very worthwhile, and you will probably buy the wilbers--as I did. From Ted.

expect to pay about 1300+ for the pair, no matter what brand you get, unless you can find a pair used and get them rebuilt.


I replaced my 41k OEMs with the wilbers and then took it on the road. I think my OEMs were still mostly decent, but the wilbers keeps the bike "planted" more--a subtle sensation; and road fatigue on long days was noticeably less. I did not have the sensation that the bike was "riding on rails," and it did NOT feel like a "new bike." but I am glad I replaced. It was due or would have soon been due.

I thought it strange that you chose the Wilbers and you didn't go for some New Oh-Leens.
Then, I though I was just too corny and kept my dorky joke to myself.

I thought that I read that Ohlins were not being made for the r1150r anymore. I am aware that Rockster models are gone. What about the R?

I think some people still have them for sale--Ted Porter did in April. He likes the Wilbers more, that was my inpression, though the Ohlins are right up there also, and they most certainly have a following. He said there were some quality control issues with some of the other brands, or suggested that

Ohlins for Roadster/Rockster can be pieced together as required. My local Ohlins guy converted Roadster shock into Rockster-spec via a few internal changes and new upper shock body.
