missing stock luggage rack :(

So, I purchased a 2004 R1150R w/ ABS in May of last year. Now I am in the process of trying to get a top case/back rest for storage and just to make the ride more comfortable for my girlfriend to go on longer trips.

I found several posts about the Shad Top Cases and they look great. What I'm finding out though is that I need a luggage rack on this thing to mount most of these top cases to. The problem is, while it looks like the Original bike came with a luggage rack, mine didn't :(. Not sure why.

So, I need some recommendations. I don't want to spend too much money. And I already have the standard side case mounts in addition to side cases.

Is there a place I can get another stock luggage rack? Is there an aftermarket replacement option, that doesn't require removal of my sidecase mount? Any howto's to build one myself. Any suggestions are welcome.

I guess this is my little Hello too. I've been lurking on this board almost since I got the bike, but this is the first time I've posted.

Thanks!

Mine didn't come with any of that, so I had to buy it from chicago BMW.

OH, ok, that makes me feel better! =D>

I guess the question is should I try to track down an OEM luggage rack? Or is there another option for getting a topcase w/ backrest that is economical and durable?

I'm sure someone here knows. I have the luggage rack and use the pirate's lair backrest. I have a T-bag to put on there if i need it so i'm topcase ignorant.

I made one out of a plastic kitchen cutting board. Needed a flat surface to mount my Pelican case and Givi case on - the BMW rack has a curved surface. Has worked for me for over 50,000 miles.

My cutting board rack :

And this my Givi Top Case mount, bolted to kitchen cutting board :

The PO of my bike installed the OEM bags and a Givi topcase, I have no complaints.

If I were doing it for myself I would look into the Caribou Cases @ http://cariboucases.com/

You probably want to give them a call to talk about fitting the R1150R. I know they make everything to fit GS's so it's just a matter of working out the details.

If you have the "swoopy" pannier rails, then the OE top rack will bolt straight to it. There's 4 bolt-holes in the upper rear section of the grab handles.

The OE rack is the same as the one that fits the K1200RS IIRC (The older "flying brick" model - with the inline 4 engine laid on it's side).

Thanks for all the replys!

I appreciate the help!!

I like that ides of creating a flatter surface by shaping a plastic cutting board.

I went ahead and won an auction for an OEM stock rack. I think I'm going to get a SHAD case to mount on it. Saw a nice example of someone doing this on here. http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17883 . And for the price I think I'll get a full top case solution set up for ~$300, including what I paid for the OEM rack. If you're adding things up, I am strongly thinking of getting one larger than the one shown in the linked thread.

I'll post a picture when I get the rack and get it mounted.
