Another entry for the windshield wars: http://www.wunderlichamerica.com/mm5/me ... e=R1200R-X

Anyone tried it?

It says: The whole design was aimed at providing the best possible protection for the rider. The effective, complex shape means adjustments are not needed. The air stream is effectively channeled away from the rider, who enjoys a turbulent-free and protected ride.

Price w/hardware isn't bad, if they do as advertised.

Looks a lot like the Cal Sci screens less the holes.

It has been hot enough down in Louisiana the past two weeks, that I actually put the BMW touring screen back on the mount to allow some air to hit me in order that the cooling vest could work properly! In this one instance the Cal Sci is way too effective. It sure is nice to be able to have a naked bike that you can take the screens off without a lot of hassle.

It appears from the photo to lean back more than the CalSci - and a number of us found some magic when we kicked the bottom edge of the CalSci out an inch. It went from being turbulent on my bike to being super smooth. Someone here was looking into getting a custom bracket made for it.. who was that again?

This looks very much like my Givi screen. I guess it's OK .....for the winter.

Yup, that was me. Some local guy is a super genius welder and we're gonna trim the mounting tabs off the OEM bracket then attach a longer one down low and shorten the upper two thus doing two things: leaning the screen back and moving the top edge closer to the rider. I am convinced that those two things are the key to smoother airflow. Project is slated for this week dependent on schedule of welder guy. Testing will be done with 16" & 18" CB.

Cool! Are you located close enough to Santa Barbara that I could day-ride over to see it when you've got it done? That would include anywhere from Paso Robles to the south end of the greater LA area.

I'm just inside the southern tip of your zone of acceptability. I'll keep you posted.

Don - I missed your posts on this. I like my CalSci, but it is almost as noisy as the BMW touring screen, slightly less os with the bottom edge kicked out 10mm (0.4") .. trouble is, under the stresses of easing into the OEM bracket, it has started to craze a bit ...

Maybe the new bracket could design could be passed to CalSci or CeeBailey to fabricate .. failing that, a good drawing or specs? I have a good fabricator here (did my custom pannier frames fro my F650CS) ... and he loves working in alloys

Okay, we modified the BMW touring bracket. The loop on the bottom was trimmed off and replaced with a longer loop. This raked the screen back by 10 degrees BUT we ended up with a much larger gap by the headlight. Test results with CB 16" were disappointing. The airflow is different and perhaps better but not a tremendous improvement. I'm not sure if the gap at the bottom was an issue and I wanted to cover the whole space with tape and completely unify the headlight and screen but I didn't want to deal with the mess.

The limiting factor is the clearance at the lower left corner of the instruments. I really think this approach has possibilities but I'm out of patience for now so the BMW Sport screen is back on the bike and a Wunderlich is on order.

I'll get some photos up later.

ps Anybody use Spray-N-Wash, the laundry stuff, to clean their bike? I read somewhere else that it works really well. Apply to cold bike, let it sit for a few minutes, agitate and rinse. I'm gonna try it this weekend.

Wonder how that bracket would work with a CalSci.. dunno where you are - if you're within riding distance, I have a slew (large number) of shields sitting around (edit - see you're in California.. anyplace near CalSci? I think they're in SanDiEggo..)

I have used P21S - a non-acid/base German made wheel cleaner to clean up the bottom of my bike. I'll be using it again this weekend before putting on my GS skid plate. It seems to work fine on any painted surfaces - and I haven't seen it attack plated surfaces. I use a small brush after spraying it on to loosen any dirt stuck in the fins, then rinse with clear water.

Let us know how it works as soon as you know.

Here's the bracket with the modification to the lower mount:

I'll have to add another search on FleaBay and see if I can pick up one for a reasonable price.. be interesting to try this sort of modification with my slew of shields and see if any make magic..

I am looking to get a windshield for my 2008 R1200R and find all this good information. Are windshields easy to remove and attach?
What does a windshield do to gas mileage? I get 50 mpg now at 683 total miles.

I got a very consistent 50 mpg averged over both twisty and slab riding (50%/50%) with my touring screen. I don't know if anybody has gotten much over that, with or without a windshield.

I'm getting 48mpg consistantly - on all backroads, lots of 2nd/3rd/4th gear twisties. No complaints - I have the 16" Cee-Bailey on at the moment, and it's great for hot weather. Makes the bike good on the slab (not too much buffetting) and keeps the bugs off my faceshield (almost) while still allowing enough air so I don't get hot.

5'8" (tall-day) 28" inseam (also tall day..)

Yes, with a Cee-Bailey's screen and BMW tall bracket and a torx screwdriver.

I got 50 mpg with a 20-inch Cee Bailey's on a 400-mile round trip to West Virginia last week. I'm at about 2,500 miles and smiling.

Any suggestions on where to purchase just the BMW windscreen brackets?

Hey Don,
That windshield you linked to sold by wunderlich is made of polycarbonate, I think. So it should be light and strong. I'm leaning towards this windshield. Does anyone have any real experience using this windshield? It sells for $300.00 plus mounting brackets. That's more than parabellum and parabellum is another windshield I'm looking at but is not polycarbonate, I think.
Robert

Also ... does the computer and tac / speedometer need protection from the wind and rain?
