Fuel gage fix, yet?

Post by nixdsg »

hey, has BMW identified a fix for the failing fuel gages yet? I've had my second one fail (1 tank of fuel on the second one) and would really like one that works, since I paid for it!

Any way to "fix" it????

Thanks.

I'm on the list for the fix .. for nearly a year now. Not holding my breath! mabye it'll be available on my next (20,000km / 12,000mi) service, due anytime now.

My fuel guage / sensor strip (is that what it is?) has had two fixes, and to be fair it's better now, but far from reliable. OBC shows far too much range on full, and is still too optimistic near empty. The fuel bars themselves give a reasonable indication, but not enough to plan stops by.

I'm still using the trip meter as a guage, and filling at before 350km (220mi) as the outside limit, more like 325km for mental comfort.

FWIW, I just did a fill with 10 miles showing on the computer. 5.23 gallons actual fill with 262 miles on the trip meter. 50.0956023 MPG. Not bad, and pretty routine for my RR.

I just fnished a two week, 2500 mile ride. Over that distance I got a very consistant 50 mpg whether over 200 miles of 6th gear super slab or 3rd gear twisties. I am very pleased.

My fuel sensor just went today - full tank, two blocks from my dealer...
They said they've been swapping out a lot of these faulty fuel sensor strips.

I'm on my third sensor. Originally "miles to empty" readings were high (around 290 when it finally settled on a # after fill up) and I ran out of fuel with 25 miles to go. Second sensor showed empty when full (w/fuel warning light on) and never changed until trip odometer was near my calculated low limit at which time it went to high "miles to empty" and warning light extinguished. The level indicator (bars) seems to mimic the "miles to empty". Third sensor - same. Still under warranty.

The 'miles-to-empty' feature is totally bogus. The light comes on with a little under a gallon left and hasn't let me down (yet). I always set the trip odometer and go about 250 miles between fill ups for consistent 50mpg.
