Forgive my ignorance but does the R1200R have a cigarette lighter or some other 12volt power source?

I'm getting my R12 this weekend from craiglist and I need a way to charge my cell phone and GPS that I will be using on a x-country trip this july.

I've seen all the cool mounts but nothing about supplied power.

There is an accessory plug on the L frame under the seat however I would recommend running a fused lead off your battery. I run one into my tankbag to charge my iPhone/iPod, digital camera or whatever.

The accessory plug is live only for 5 minutes or so after the bike is turned off, so you can't charge your phone when stopped. I have my gps running off of the battery directly (fused). I plan on installing an outlet , also, connected directly to the battery, so I can charge my phone overnight when I am camping.

Running wires to a tank bag is a brilliant solution so you can charge on the run, but it's just plain easier to add an outlet.

hmmm, i bought a $7 waterproof cigarette lighter adaptor at Wal-Mart that just has 2 leads coming off of it. On my VTX I had it running from battery directly into the saddle bag so I could charge accessories while I was riding.

What's the accessory plug look like ( I haven;t picked up my bike yet)? Is there a universal adaptor for it to be used with navi, cell phones, etc?


I'll have to put some thought into running it into the tank bag or to a handlebar mount.

There is a dedicated connector for using a GPS that is zip tied in front of the tank but behind the horn. The accessory outlet looks like a cigarette lighter outlet but is smaller. You can get an adapter for the accessory outlet that will allow you to use a standard cigarette lighter plug.

have any of you tapped off of the factory gps harness connection behind the horn for your garmin, etc.?

Basically yes. A few on this list have done this. It works great, if you search I think you will fine some info that was posted last summer. I made a plug out of the cover that is on the female plug by using a few pieces of paper clip soldered to wire going to my GPS (Garmin) and filling it with silicone, it's been working for a few years. Hardest part is making sure you don't get the polarity wrong, check with a good voltmeter, check again and then check before you plug into your GPS.

As Mogu 83 states, some of us here have used the aux power supply under the front of the tank. See viewtopic.php?f=20&t=8841&start=0. There is another thread that contains a picture of the repair connector, just search the forum. I use mine for a Zumo 550, works great.

Harry, paper clips and silicone, sheesh!!! Makes my $49 Canadian connector look a little dear.

thanks guys. plug needed is BMW part number 83300413585 for those of you just coming into this thread. you can get it on bikebandit or from and BMW dealer (they may have to order it). i'll be wiring my gps with it!

I just bought my R 12 today.
It already has this plug hooked up directly to the battery. What size plug is that? I guess it's for heated jackets but do they make adaptors to charge cell phones and GPS's?

People swear that there is an outlet at the front of the bike. I believe them, but try as I might I have never been able to see or feel it. Although no big deal, I am dreading having to move the tank to access it.

Can someone tell me what kind of connector it has?

I (of course) know where the one on the right side of the bike is...
But what about the one in front, that we're hearing about...

the white part is the bmw connector that you can purchase, and is NOT on the bike, but the black part is. it's under tape (probably) and not super easy to find if you don't know what to look for. this is intended to be tapped off of for the BMW gps, so it's not exactly a 'user' port like the powerlet one on the side. perhaps that is the confusion.

Thanks, Wes, I totally missed that.

I have a little device coming from my running light in the headlight shell that has a diode that fools the can bus and is a source of 12v while the bike is on. I would not use it for heated clothing but for radar detectors and what not it works fine. I also have my can bus powerlet taped up and out of the way under the seat and a fused non can bus outlet in it's place on the frame coming from my Centech fuse box. This I do use for heated clothing and trickle charging.

Thanks RonR. Just ordered the adaptor I needed.

Maybe I am stating the obvious, I think it is the Euro style 12 v jack, and the adapter converts it to the US style.
