Sometime over the past few months my rear adjustable "mud flap" must have fallen off. I just noticed it today. Do I really need this thing anyway? I had the bike to the dealer this week just for its 24,000 mile check. Come to think about it, they did install new rear brake pads. Is there any reason the tech would need to remove the mud flap and then possibly he forgot to put it back on?

I doubt he took it off. They had a tendency to just fall off. Mine was gone before my first tank of gas was run out. Never have missed it.

Mine was gone the 1st day I brought my bike home. Didn't like the look of the fender so out came my hacksaw.

Thanks for the reassurance boxer and Taos. I wonder why BMW engineered this mud flap thing but not a 50 cent cap for the hole in the rear wheel to prevent the wheel bolts from rusting?

Cos' I think the mud flap prevents water from spraying up.

After two weeks of ownership, I noticed tonight my mud flap is now missing! Is there a great mud flap conspiracy going on?

I went ahead and ordered a replacement mud flap from a local BMW dealer. It is going to cost about $21.

Well I don't' really know why other than maybe I wanted to keep my beakster in stock condition. And I have heard that when riding in the rain without it the rooster tail will leave an oily streak down your back. Or, I did not have anything better to spend $21 on other than a piece of flat unpainted plastic about 4" x 8" in size. I picked it up from the dealer today. The fastener (nut and bolt) does not come with it. That was another $2.

Easily half my riding is in the rain and I've never bothered to lower the mudflap. No oily streak either. Maybe if I'd ride all day in the rain I would think about that flap, but generally I don't think it's too important.

Mine disappeared too! Along with part of my fender! Of course, the jig saw that made it disappear is sitting on my workbench!

I never noticed any oily streak on my back after riding in the rain and I have done plenty of that. I have been told it is not wise to tailgate someone missing said mudflap however!

I have a front fenda extenda and it seems to do a better job of keeping crud off the front of the engine. As for the rear adjustable fenda extenda, I never really thought it made much difference so I just keep it at its shortest.

Funnily enough, I took the extending mudflap off and stored it; didn't seem all that useful, and since it was held on by just a tiny bolt, it seemed like it would fall off eventually anyway.

The rear fender of a r1200r is about the same size as a chopped r1150r rear fender...

Maybe the r1200r isn't designed for riding in the rain?

I think it's probably there to reduce the amount of spray thrown onto following traffic. Having said that, I'm not sure how many car drivers would realise that fact......

I lost my mudflap as well, then hacked the tail section off just above the botom of the plate.

As to the rooter tail...who cares? Its behind you. If someone is riding too close behind and in a straight line back, then i call it motivation to get back. The water spout from the back of a 12gs with the possum scraper removed is more noticable.
