Hi Folks!

Any one have any suggestions for replacing the bicycle mirrors on my 2000 R1100R? I'd like larger mirrors for practical reasons and more stylish mirrors ... well, for stylish reasons

There is an Italian company making "cat's eye" mirrors that fit, but I've deleted the link.
The stock mirrors are actually adjustable to give good vision, but the position is 'counter intuitive'. Try moving the arms to a slightly forward pointing position and then adjusting the actual mirror. I don't know why it works, but I was surprised when I accidentally tried it.

If you are prepared to shell out big bucks go for Rizoma (http://www.rizoma.com/). The problem on the R1100R is the right hand mirror as it does not follow standard fixing. You could take other mirrors such as the ones of the K1200RS (the flying brick) or R1200C but you'll have to get yourself adapters made at a local tool shop ...

A little more info regarding the oval mirrors of the R1200C Monthauk. I have these on my R1100R. The left hand mirror fits without any change. For the right hand mirror the following in necessary: the thread at the mirror needs to be cut off (remaining length of the journal should be 20mm) and a new thread (M8) needs to be cuto to the journal (12 mm length). The M8 thread in the brake-unit needs to be drilled away with an 8mm drill. Now you can attach the mirror to your brake-unit and fix with a locknut below.

If you have the necessary tools you can do it at home. Since I did not have thread cutters I got it done at local toolshop. Took 15 minutes and 15 bucks ...

P.S. I wonder why they would use different fasteners on the different sides.

That is one of the mysteries which only BMW would be able to answer (if at all ...). There is no logical reason why the fasterner on the right hand side differs from the left hand side. In many cases BMW did not follow any conventions and always preferred to cook their own soup.

A single mirror of the R1100R for 100 US$? You must be kiddin! On e-bay Germany these are available (in black) for EUR 30/piece = US$ 40

You'll see they're marked sold, click on the "why are they marked sold" at the top of the page for an explanation, and what to do...

You can make adapters for any after market merror very cheeply. Get the corect size bolt and nuts (3) and go to a muffler shop they may weld the 2 nuts on top of the bolt for free.That takes care of the right side. The left side make an adapter from a flat pice of stock using the left hand thredded bolt and some spacers. Drill 2 holes in the flat stock. You now can mount 100's of differant after market merrors.
Worked for me.

Sledge, it should be taken into account that the right hand side is a left-hand thread! Such bolts are difficult to find! Moreover the solution as described by you (with the 2 bolts) will look homemade and ugly in my opinion.

Yes it is,how ever you would use the factory bolt and some spacers to conect the adaptor that you would make from the flat pease of mettal. It worked for me this is what is on my bike.

Yes, but the black ones are really cheap looking...the chrome ones are the way to go

That's a matter of taste I would say. Some folks have used the mirrors of the K1200RS (which are black plastic as well ) and are very happy with them. I prefer the oval (chrome) ones of the R1200C as they fit well with my R1100R ... At the end of the day it is about either the original (round) ones or some other formatted mirrors (either after-market or mirrors of different BMW models).

You see the round and the oval one with the order numbers. Right and left mirror are identical. Mounting them is easy as I said earlier on. If I have time later on I'll post a pic opf how they look on the Roadster.

Very nice! Two questions...

- How did you deal with the left hand thread issue?

- Where did you get the cafe fairing?

Hi Dave,

suggest you look at my earlier post where I described how I mounted the mirrors. The left side mirror fits without a change. Regarding the right side mirror I

a) got the tread at the mirror cut away to a total length of the little journal of 2 cm
b) I got a new thread (M8) cut onto the journal (normal thread)
c) I drilled away the left-hand thread in the fitting (8 mm drill)

Now the mirror can be put in the hole and fixed with an M8 nut from below. Very easy.

The fairing is from a German company called Wuedo (type CR11) made especially for the R1100R. However unfortunately Wuedo ceased to exist since February this year and I don't know if this fairing can be bought anymore and where.
