Rear BMW top case

Hello out there,

I have a BMW LT top case and want to install it on my rockster. I already have the system cases and mounts, just need the mounting base or some similar solution to install case. Has anyone seen or done anything like this?

One of the brothers here adapted the 31 liter RT topcase to his RR. You'll notice he reinforced the support to the plate. The omission of the rack lowers the whole thing and makes it look like BMW designed it. You'll have to buy the mounting plate for the case and fabricate that bracket. I think this looks far better than the usual add on top case.

I think he bought both from the dealer. I recall he said it was expensive. I would surf Ebay for that LT mount I think. I have seen parts from broken LT's on there. In my thoughts about building a similar setup, I have always figured to bend up a nice tube rear support frame to take the extra weight. You will surely overload that plastic luggage mount with a big top case. I should find the RT mount plate and start building the rear mount structure. Another option to consider when starting this project is to buy a set of the old R1100R luggage mounts then welding the entire rear support for the LT plate to those. Having the top box would let me ride without the side cases most of the time and also eliminate the add on back rest.

I'm looking to do something similar with a 49L top case from my totaled R1200RT. It will be huge but useful if the miss goes on a trip! Going to by a R1150R top plate to get the side brackets and then will try to locate the RT top plate and try to join the two...

No question about the hugness of a 49L case. If you intend to fabricate a mount for the R12RT base plate, you don't need the rear rack for the RR, just the two luggage mounts. I have seen quite a few of the installations with an adapter plate mounted on top of the rear rack, and they all look like the bag is mounted too high. As low and as wide as possible I think looks more natural. That's why I like the 31L RT bag so much, it looks like it belongs there.

I'm just looking for the stock plate as it includes a bit of a bracket that connects the side bag cases and provides what appears to be a horizontal surface to screw the R1200RT plate into. Dunno yet as I just got the stock plate ordered off of ebay. Now, if I can just find the RT bracket... Wish I knew where my totaled RT went...

I don't know that my 15" laptop will fit in to the smaller case Good thing I don't usually have to take it with me. I can fit my laptop backpack and an Xbox 360 in that bag. Very useful when staying in a hotel for a week by ones self. So the case will only be there when needed.

The RT top case looks right. The RT case mount bracket borrowed and adapted to the stock rear rack of the R1150R looks sturdy. I do wonder if the angle of the case could be changed. It looks as though it it tilted towards the front of the bike. Maybe it's the photos - Could you post a profile photo of the bike?

I'm interested in this addition to my own R1150R.
