I removed my muffler last week and have been on the hunt for the perfect stainless steel exhaust tip. I went to about 4 different auto part stores with no luck. All they had were chromed, which would start to rust after the 1st rain. So today, just by happenstance, I was in the auto section at Walmart and found a Pilot round SS tip for $9.95. It's really a great bargain because I've seen it online at many different places for much more $. It's model # PM-582. It's very cool looking and it's slanted.

I am interested in how that exhaust tip will fit. The listed entry ID is 2.25", while our exhaust tube measures in at 1.75" OD. There will be a gap. And how well does the grip mechanism work. I bought a good looking chrome tip at Kragen - after a lot of looking and measuring. The tip I bought also has a 2.25" ID, so it's kinda sloppy. I drilled some holes in the exhaust tube - very tough - broke two titanium bits on the tough stainless tube - and put some screws in. It stays on, but I'm not satisfied with the fit-up. Also, when I was looking to possibly clamp a tip on, I want to make shure the clamp matches to one just upstream. Anybody know where to get that type (or very close) of clamp (BMW likely sells it, but haven checked there yet)?

About drilling thru stainless steel . . . . you need:
-- a sharp drill
-- an oil drop or 2
-- a slow RPM (even small drills that normally should go fast)
-- a great deal of push pressure
-- high RPM's will burn and destroy the drill (as you found out).

Another solution, that I would prefer if/when I run w/o the muffler would be this steel 18" long straight pipe.

I just installed the new tip. Here are a few pictures. You'll notice I took a few with the stock chrome shield and without. Personally, it doesn't look right with the shield as it's not the same width. You'll also notice that I turned the slanted part outwards to keep the heat away from anything important. The small bolts really hold it in place well.

Looks good. How does the exhaust stream work with luggage? I'm interested in this mod to allow me to use a full-sized left-side hardcase -- without the cutout for the muffler. Would the exhaust blow onto the case if it were there?

I'll have to leave your luggage question to someone else as I don't have any. The best part is no more sewing machine. Just a low tiger growl.

The left side case does get hotter. Nothing on the case was damaged after a season of using this system (I was at the last Bash with it), but I wouldn't put the contents of an ice cream run in that case

RCV7 -it could be a photographic illusion, but would this exhaust tip direct hot gas onto the pillions toes?

Actually, no. The pillion's feet would not get hot as you can rotate the slanted part of the end of the tip in any direction you'd like. Also, the pillion's foot peg is far left of the tip. It's difficult to see from the picture. You should see a Dr. about that foot fetish though.

Thanks RVC7, it was hard to tell the relative positions from two-dimensional pics. I like the exhaust tip; it looks good, has better sound (although quiet is nice, too), and especially the ability to use the full left bag. I'm considering it...

I've run mine like that for almost 7yrs now and there is no problem with either the rear foot peg or the left case.

I've done many long trips with both full size cases and pillion.

I think a tip with a curve of some kind will keep less exhaust 'dirt' from collecting on the rear wheel. Also, check those screws frequently - I've lost three tips from them lossening up and falling off while going down the road. The final trick was to weld the tip on. So far, that's been holding up.

Here is what i found. I have luggage and this way I can put the full size bag on and direct the exhaust away from the wheel or the bag.

I like the way your exhaust tip looks! I tried one similar to that one when I first removed my muffler as well. I didnt like the sound as much. Because of the gap between the pipes and the larger diameter and maybe because of the rolled tip all the sound seemed to resonate. I finally found one with a closed diameter that didnt alter the sound from the pipe as much.

I notice most of these tips would allow rain to fall into the exhaust (when stopped, obviously). Is it not worth worrying about?

Y'all are worrying too much over this. I replaced my muffler couple of years ago with an aluminum tip, about 4" long and beveled. To make it fit I had them cut two longitudinal cuts in the cat end about 1.5 " long. I got a compression bracket from a Harley store that looks just like the ones BMW uses. I believe the size was 1 7/8". There are three ways you can go with materials, all with advantages and disadvantages:

Chrome is shiny and Y chromosomes are attracted to shiny; but there really isn't anything that is chrome on the bike ( the muffler is stainless)

Stainless steel is the same material as the rest of the exhaust system and will likely "blue" in the same way--SS is more expensive

Aluminum, cheaper and the same color as the wheels.

I thought 4" looked best and the length affects the throatiness of the exhaust note. I originally had it at 6, but had it cut down to 4".

Re the exhaust note. It is not louder, or if it is , not by much, but the note is much more pleasing, deeper and sportier sounding. The change in volume is such that a normal conversation can be just as easily had as with the muffler in place.

I have never been sorry I switched out the muffler. The 4" length and the bevel pointing outward does not overheat or smudge the rear foot peg assembly nor the side case---at all.

The 4" tip was fabricated at a local Mitey Muffler for about $25 iirc, while I waited and we could try it right there. Its finish was at first a little rough, but was easily smoothed out with a brass wheel brush. Steel wool gave it a very clean matte finish.
