Anyone install the touratech drive shaft crash bung?

I just received one from Sierra BMW and tried to install it but ran into a glitch. After you pry the plastic cap off (a pain in the ass as I was afraid I was going to gouge something up) you the are supposed to just press the device in and tighten it up and your done but no go as the screw is too long and bottoms out in the hole. The device has a sleeve that sits at the end of a screw and the sleeve expands as you thread the screw in but the screw bottoms out and starts pushing the bung out and after it's tight it leaves about a 1/8" gap. I guess I'll just get another screw or cut down the one they sent me
Just curious if any one has had this experience. I'll take pictures and post when I am done.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I'm interested to see how this comes out as this item is high on my list to get.

Hope the image link works, 1st time trying this. Anyhow, I took a hack saw to the screw, shortend it by about 3/16" and it worked like a charm and I think it looks good too!

That does look good. Thanks for posting that up. Think I'm going to place an order for that and an oil cooler guard.

That DOES look good! Thanks for the information. If I buy it knowing I have to trim the screw I will be much less bummed out and more prepared when it arrives.

Below is a response I got from Touratech when I asked them about the gap (This came after I already cut the screw). Not sure if I believe it or not but to be safe I pulled it out slightly and left a small gap) So I guess no need to cut the screw????

Dave,
The same crash bung is installed on our 2008 R1200GS in the shop and it has the same 1/8" gap. I believe that the gap is intended in the design of the part so that it does not interfere with the pivot that it mounts in.

What would you call the part that goes into the pivot part of the bike, a rubber expansion plug or what? How would you Google it?

Okay, I'm going to be a contrarian here, and trust me, I've got my share of cosmetic farkles on the bikes, but...
As a crash bung, how is that supposed to do anything? It's inboard of the FD itself, and well inboard of the footpegs. Plus, since it's friction fit, the friction of a crash is likely to just pull it out of the pivot.
It looks good, but is that the (only) purpose?
