The bottom of my front forks have started to peel. I would like to get them repaired. So a few questions:

What metal is the bottom of the fork?
I was considering chroming them or powder coat, which is more durable?
Can the bottom of the forks be separated from the rest for easier postage/coating?

The lower part of the slider is made of an aluminum allow and powder coating would be more durable and easier to clean. The fork will have to be fully disassembled as the power coating process requires the part to be baked at ~ 400 F to harden the coating. Also be aware that the powder coater will have to be extremely aware not to coat threaded areas or areas where something has to be fitted to as the powder coating will add to the diameter and will not allow the mating part to be fitted and it is hxxl to remove.

You might consider 2 part epoxy paint as another alternative as it would serve about the same purpose as the powder coating, with less of a problem with application and covering holes, etc, besides, you can paint it any color you desire.

Take all the paint off and polish the alloy. Once done looks good and a quick rub over now and then is all you need.

New to the Rockster (and this forum), but it made me a BMW convert - great bike!

Anyhow, i'd like to revive this thread on fork peeling - since i am having the same problem, the forks chipped at the base exposing patches of aluminium corrosion.

Don't really want to send the fork off for powder coating just yet, while recovering financially from buying the bike itself...
Does anyone have experience with sanding/painting the fork like the epoxy that someone mentioned? Or some aircraft spec aluminium coating stuff? Or any other ideas?

One easy repair is to remove the wheel, sand down the worn/chipped areas, prime an get a can of BMW wheel paint (it is for car wheels but, if I remember correctly, the same color as the forks and the valve covers.
