Something odd started this week as I prepare for my 6000 mile check tomorrow 11/14....When I go to start the bike nothing, no start energizing sequence, no nothing except the click of turning my key to the right position. Upon retry (Turning key) I get power on the second or third try.
Bad ignition switch?
Bad key ring? NOTE>>>Already had the recall performed.

Try the battery; a lot of us have been having instant battery death without warning. If you have the original Exide in the bike, that is probably what happened.

2011 RT WARNING: TEST RIDING THE R1200R IS HAZARDOUS TO YOUR FINANCES
Had my 6000 mile check done (Will repeat part of this post over at 6000 mile thread..cost comparisons).Spent $400 for the check, and time for the ignition issue, and a new $150 battery..dino oil.
btw...I had cooked my original battery by leaving my lights on at Starbucks a month ago for two hours, and had replaced it with the similarly shaped ybst ...whatever battery.
The dealer was unable to duplicate my problem, but the Bike tosssed up a numerous codes.... so I figured why not. and bought a new battery.
NOTE THE DEALER HAS REPLACED THE ANENNA RING MULTIPLE TIMES ON A COUPLE OF BIKES.. one bike is in it's SIXTH ring.. No problems in a little over amonth for him. Dealer claims there are Replacement Ring generations.....

YOU MUST DEMAND THE DEALER INSTALL THE LATEST REPLACEMENT ANTENNA RING WHICH ENDS IN THE PART NUMBER ...... 247. TO DATE THERE HAS NOT BEEN A FAILURE WITH THE .....247 ANTENNA RING WHICH WAS PUT OUT AS THE LATEST AN GREATEST REVISION PART IN MARCH/APRIL OF 2008....... I CALLED BERLIN AN BASICALLY RAISED SOUTHERN BOY HELL TO BMW AN THAT WAS THE RESPONSE.............................. LATER I HAD TO OPPORTUNITY TO TELL CORPORATE BMW ZACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT OF EXIDE BATTERY AN THE COVER UP THE FACTORY HAS ENGAGED REF THE FAILURE RATE OF 2006-2008 R1200R'S TOTIN THOSE DAM ROADSIDE FAILURE'S WAITIN TO HAPPEN........... BMW WONT TO HAPPY WITH ME WHEN I FINISHED,,, GUESS WHAT -- I WONT TO HAPPY WITH THEM EITHER... NOW FOR 1 MORE LIL TIDBIT---- ME AN CORBIN BEEN GOIN ROUND AN ROUND AN I AM VERRRRRRRRR UNHAPPY CONCERNING THIER SEAT...... UPDATES TO FOLLOW
IN FACT-- YOU MIGHT WANA ASK THE DEALER WHY IN THE HELL HE AINT INSTALLED THE .....247 ANTENNA RING , I MEAN ITS COMMON KNOWLEDGE TO EVERY DEALER IN THE USA TO USE THAT LATEST ISSUE----- ESPCIALLY SINCE NO REPORTED FAILURES WITH THE NEW ONE. LOOKS TO ME THAT DEALER NEEDS TO HEAR SOME IN YER FACE CONVERSATION FROM YOU CONCERNING THIS.
The symptoms of the ring failure are rather obvious - EWS! staring at you from the instrument cluster display. If you're not seeing this - the ring ain't the problem.
Given your symptoms I'd be checking for a pinched/damaged wire going up to the ignition switch. Someone else (I think here - if not - on the MOA site) had identical problems after he had the ring antenna replaced. The first dealer couldn't duplicate it - or find it. The second dealer he went to had it happen in the shop and was able to track it down to a loose connection to the ignition switch, undoubtably done when the antenna ring replacement was done.
YMMV and I don't YELL.

Somehow, I thought that might be the result. It's "custom" right? No return, no refund, it's yours.
Meanwhile - update on the Sargent seat. Still liking it - I don't notice it when I'm on the bike, which is the best thing I can say about a seat - it don't make my ass hurt. That's a very good thing.

PARTEC-- PRETTY MUCH SOUNDS LIKE BATTERY IGNITON ISSUE AN NOT AN EWS/ANTENNA RING FAILURE-- I'M VER CERTAIN BASED ON YOUR LAST POST IT IS NOT AN ANTENNA RING ISSUE. NOW BOUT THE CORBIN SEAT-- THEY JUMPED RIGHT ON IT WHEN I WAS IN FLA STORE CUZ I WAS DOWN FOR FALL RALLY AT DAYTONA,, AFTER THE KEYS AN THE GLADES I SENT THEM THE SEAT PER AGREEMENT TO CALIF STORE WHEN ALL DEFECTS HAHAHAHA ARE CORRECTED,, AN BASED ON WHAT I SAW IN THE FLA STORE THEY GET A TON O DEFECTS TO CORRECT. WELL ALL THAT WAS OVER 4 WEEKS AGO,, SEAT HAS BEEN SENT TO CALIF STORE AN ZERO ZILCH NADA NOTTIN FROM THE CORBIN PEOPLE...... ONLY REASON I KNOW ITS AT THE CALIF STORE IT THAT UPS SENT ME A CONFORMATION...... SO HERES THE DEAL IN NEXT 10 MINUTES IM CALLIN JR AT THE FLA STORE, WHO HAS FACILATATED THE ENTIRE PROCESS AN IM GONNA SEE IF I CANT MOTIVATE HIM TO DO THE RIGHT THANG... BUT I WILL SAY THIS-- AFTER 5 SEATS I VE PURCHASED FROM CORBIN, VISITING THE STORE 25 YRS IN A ROW ONCE EACH YR DAYTONA RALLY,, I WILL NEVER AGAIN SPEND A PENNY ON CORBIN OR RECOMMEND EM..............................
I have a Ducati Multistrada, and it uses a simular system of key reconition. With each machine comes a code card, and you use the throttle to input the code should something hapen to the antitheft system. I have never had to use this process, but I know one who has, it over rides the system and lets you start the engine.

Sounds like Ducait was reading the BMW forums (I'd made that suggestion..)

This EWS failure seems to be a fairly common problem, I have been without my own bike 2007 R1200R since 29th September ( see Firing on One ) and have had two loan bikes from the agents in the meantime the current one being a 2008 GS and yesterday it died on me - EWS failure so they are collecting it today and hopefully letting me have another loaner until the repairs to mine are completed.

Dealer consulting w/ BMW North America....BMW Mechanic in Daytona at BMW sponsered Electrics Clinic...might have an answer, might not.
Most likely. I will need to leave bike w/ dealer so they can replicate the problem ( Turn key and nothing, no systems energizing, no NOTHING...just the click of key locking into th on position ) . Once replicated BMW will authorize the replacement of the replacement Antenna Ring.....while under going disection the system will be examined from the battery cables to the ignition switch. Note Battery was replaced a month ago as a first correction attemp. Bike stays on Battery Tender when not in use. Bike used almost dailey for local commutes of 2 to 10 miles oneway...say 200-300 miles a week. Don't stone me for this tid bit. ..but our home does not have a garage/carport..(lost in a lot split years ago..new garage on post recession list) .Bike stays covered. location Florida. Weather related??
Interesting and troubling..last couple of days no problems.. keep looking for trends..none found to date.
But you know what.. I like really this bike!!

Still not been to the dealer to have her dissected. NO starting issues since last post.except...probably road the bike 6 out of every 7 days. Mostly commuting..about 8 miles each way. stop and go. Weather ..dry 58-78F
Took here out for a quick 170mile round tripper on Monday. Later that day I took a little ride to the postoffice...
I went to leave the post ofice turned my key from locked to off...and the ignition ENERGIZED didn't think anything about it and I pushed the start button and VAROOM then she died.
Turned the key one more click to on. energized and VAROOM off I went. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I had a similar thing happen to me. I turned the key and nothing came on. Since I hadden't anything else to do, I switched the kill switch off and on and the bike returned to normal. Try it next time--its worth a shot.
